HP / Dell / etc. Laptop password help (April - July 2008)

I've just been offered a HDD password for $80 !!! - paypal payment. I don't think this is really the spirit of these type of forums.
I agree. Who offered you to pay $80 ?

Can anyone help for free, (Dell is my next choice, but I would rather not wait)
Dell is 24Hr turn around, they just need all the correct info (I posted info a couple of pages back)

or is this forum (or at least this thread) just for those wanting to make money?
Definately NOT, actually the contrary, anyone asking for payment will be banned.

I'm sure "deepdark" was just trying to be a good Samaritan - but he passed on an email address for said zakri [zakrisaid@gmail.com]. I sent him a mail and got the following reply:
hi,
what's the problem, system password or hard disk password?
system password cost75$/hdd cost 80$, by paypal
regards

I purchased the XPS from a genuine reseller who buys hundreds of laptops every week direct from Dell. Unfortunately none of the original owner details are known, so the length of time Dell take to unlock the drive is extended (well, it is in the UK anyway).

Definately NOT, actually the contrary, anyone asking for payment will be banned.

This is what I assumed, but reading this thread it appears that the few who have the {alleged} ability to help are asking for substantial payments. Now....I do understand....if these people have invested months of time in finding a solution they should receive SOME recompense....but...without wanting to over-react, this is more in the lines of extortion.

Still.....Enough of this rant. If anyone can assist, perfect....If not, then thanks for reading anyway.

You are bringing new news to us, about member deepdark, who is providing this email addy to an already banned member.

I will inform the Admin here of this issue.

Regarding, if members have any free help. Yes tons of it, please read all posts here, there are many options. Strangely your issue about unknown previous owner, was also mentioned. Dell will help here as well. But as you say the process may take longer.

If any other members have been asked for payment through emails, please come forward and state this. This is the only way we can rid TechSpot of this private business.

I go way back myself
I have worked for Dell for 6 Years ironically (also I left about 5 years ago)
Didn't realize this password stuff would be so huge issue
I have contacted Dell directly and emailed (with response) from the top people there. They are fully aware of this thread, and keep an eye on it for bettering their support.

As Jester says: If anyone can assist, perfect....If not, then thanks for reading anyway. These forums are to help us among us.

I have read thru 21 pages of posts. Lots of helpful info here, just nothing I need. I have an HP/Compaq laptop, TC4400, same mainboard as NC4400, that I replaced the mainboard on. Of course, guess what, a bios password is in place! I can't reload the correct OS, as I can't boot from anything other than the internal disk drive. I have not tried to leave the disk out, to see if that will force a different boot order, and I am unable to determine how to find the hash code. Bios access is F10. Any help would be appreciated.

You can also "missing link" even for non-warrantied issues
HP response is "replace the mainboard". For the small fee of $405, and my old one! There has to be another (better, cheaper) way.

Davidlee48, you have to reflash bios chip to remove password(AFAIK). this model is without any master passwords.

I have attempted to update bios with newest version available from HP, but asks for bios PW to run flash utility.

when i say about bios chip reflashing, i mean: unsolder the bios chip from MB, and flash it using external hardware programmer.

Cheaper to buy new motherboard? $405 from HP. Bios chip reflash? I would, if I knew which chip was the right one. Any help to locate and ID the chip would be appreciated.
