Microphone Problem

I am working on WinXP SP2. My microphone is not working at all. When I speak into it, no sound comes from the speakers. I have connected it to the pink jack at the back of the computer. I am sure that the problem is not with the speakers since I can hear MP3s etc. I don't think the problem is with the microphone either since it's a relatively new one & it used to work till some time back.

What could the problem be? Please help me out.

Hi Ron,
what are your computers specs? Make, model? Can you update XP to Service Pack 3. Do you keep up with the Windows Updates?
