Microsoft says Windows is becoming an agentic OS, but users simply hate the idea

Sounding off: Microsoft has often talked about turning Windows into an agentic OS, despite serious reservations from many quarters. Most Windows users are unhappy with the idea of AI taking greater control of their PCs, and they are once again making it clear to Redmond that they are not on board with the company's plans.

Earlier this week, Windows president Pavan Davuluri reiterated that Microsoft is leveraging AI to evolve Windows into an "agentic OS" as part of its long-term strategy to transform the widely used desktop platform into an AI-native environment – one where AI agents can understand context, make decisions on users' behalf, and perform complex, multi-step tasks without human intervention.

Davuluri's post was intended to set the stage for Microsoft's Ignite conference, taking place from November 18 to 21. However, many Windows users seized the opportunity to voice their frustration, accusing Davuluri of ignoring repeated pleas to stop adding more AI features to Windows.

Hundreds replied to the thread, and many expressed the same sentiment: nobody wants an AI-powered Windows.

The overwhelming majority of replies were negative, with many users questioning why Microsoft is not taking public opinion into account before making major product decisions. One user even asked Davuluri why the company is stubbornly sticking to its plan despite widespread negative feedback.

Microsoft previously revealed that agentic Windows will center around Copilot, which will handle a wide range of workflows, including opening and closing applications, organizing files, summarizing documents, drafting emails, and more. To perform any task, users could describe a workload in natural language, and Copilot will perform it automatically, without the user having to move a muscle.

According to Microsoft, its much-criticized AI assistant will gain three new features in future updates: Copilot Voice, Copilot Vision, and Copilot Actions. Copilot Voice will interpret natural-language commands, while Copilot Vision will scan open webpages to gather relevant information.

Finally, Copilot Actions will carry out tasks by interacting directly with apps and local files. It will also be able to retrieve additional information from the cloud using Connectors when prompted. Notably, entire workflows can be completed using only voice... no keyboard or mouse required.

Yeah no thanks. I prefer CTR+L, "T", -enter- and clicking it with my mouse.
Much faster, don't need to wait for anything, don't need to think about how to phrase things, don't need my microphone constantly monitored.
PC use is a lot of this kind of use.

Not everything needs to be AI. Heck AI isn't even at a level where I trust it to do much.
I ask it to write code, the code doesn't work.
I ask it to make me a list with reverse blade white aRgb fans it misses out on 90%.
So I make my own Google sheet with those fans, ask AI to add image links to the sheet... It hallucinates a bunch of non existent URLs.

All these companies acting like they have discovered pure magic and everyone should use it. It's undercooked and unwanted.
Maybe once it's at the level of the 'computer' in Star Trek we can have this conversation again, as an option mind you not as the only thing.

From my experience, this is typical Microsoft "product improvement." It goes something like this - take features away, claim they are making it better, and be incapable of recognizing that they just turned their product into a steaming pile of excrement. This has been happening since at least the year 2000 perhaps before.

If they do make Windohs Agentic, I'm through with it.

Microsoft, does what ever they please. They, do NOT care about their customers who made them what they are today. Which, isn't saying much, really. I use Linux Mint, it's not perfect, but it's night and day better than Windows!

Voice control has been around for quite a while, and everybody always hated it. Natural speech or not.

I have to agree with win7user, were coming to a point where Linux is actually better than Windows, because as much Linux has improved, windows has deteriorated.

And next thing you know, it mails personal or confidential information to the wrong people or posts it in some public place, or screws around with things you did not want. If I cannot fully disable the agentic features with EASE, I will have to abandon Windows.
I came to the realization that I had said some version of this exact same thing repeatedly for over a decade. Microsoft banks on you screaming into the void and not actually doing anything to change it.

Just do it. Pull that rug now. Get the pain of learning a new system out of the way sooner rather than later. I’m glad I did.

Over these past 2 years I haven’t once been boiling angry at some bullshit caused by Microsoft meddling with my OS. I grew up on that OS and they ran me out. I’m a MUCH happier computer-user today and I’m glad that tumor of an OS has been removed.

I think I especially wouldn't want it then when it is even more powerful. Only if it ran locally on my machine, but we already know Microsoft's long term plan is to make the entire operating system and storage cloud based so that's not going to happen with them. Plan accordingly. I'm already off Windows personally, aside from being forced to use it at work.

I stopped caring about MS and their almost daily shenanigans.
Still on W10 but I'm owed a pile of money and when that (fi-nal-ly...sigh) arrives I'll probably go MacOS.
Guess I'm too stupid but I still cannot understand why MS is suiciding the Windows department. Mark my words the fed-up user effect is going to snowball and then become an avalanche. It's sad as it's largely because of Microsoft that I came to love computers and computing buuuut as with so many things in life, I'll get over it, and/or learn to live with it.

I'm with the majority as far as not wanting AI be forced on me but it seems most commenters are ignoring the fact that MS is only one of many, including Apple, Google and others, who are trying to shove AI down our throats!
And to those suggesting Linux, save your breath! If MS is the evil you all are afraid it is, then trust me, they're not after the minority who are capable of replacing Windows with Linux, and as far as they're concerned, you can protest all you want or even boycut MS, you won't make a dent!

Always the issue with Windows is that Microsoft continues to try to make it an "app" with features. I just want my OS to only focus on running applications fast and efficiently. I use programs and apps to get the functionality that I want. I don't need the OS f'ing it up. However, there is no money in that I guess, so the enshitification continues.

I only wish Linux could stop being such a "nerd" OS and truly compete with Windows, specifically in Gaming and easy of use for non-tech people.

Before everyone starts flaming about the different versions of Linux, gaming support, .....; I want to be clear that I have two Linux computers I use daily. I have used Linux for 20+ years. Linux has some great features and there are some more user friendly versions, but Linux overall just fails to cross into mainstream for everyday people. That day will never come until AAA game studios target Linux first and not as an afterthought. The consequence is that we have to continue to put up with MS's BS.

I thought about this last night. The company I work for has forced Win 11 down our collective throats.

One odd-ball thing I have noticed is that I'll open the file explorer to a particular folder. I may open a file in that folder and do something with it in another application, yet I'll leave explorer open to that folder and then minimize it.

At some point, while I am doing something in another application, the explorer window that is open to the folder that I opened to that folder, will push itself to the foreground, even though I've done nothing to bring it to the foreground. Its as if Windohs "thinks" I need to access that folder for some reason even though I don't want to or need to when Windohs brings it to the foreground.

I have not been able to figure out why that happens, however, one of my co-workers has experienced exactly the same thing. IMO, its really annoying and makes me think that the more recent updates to Win 11 have incorporated some level of Agentic AI already.

I don't need, and I imagine most other people that use computers, don't need some piece of crap OS that tries to anticipate what it's user is going to do next and then the OS does that anticipated action automatically. It sounds like I might have to fight the computer to get it to do what I want rather than what it "thinks" I want to do.

I doubt you are listening, Microsoft, but WTF are you trying to pull with this Agentic OS crap? Are you so desperate for funding that you need your OS to force your users to go to web sites your users do not want to visit, or grab data that is highly personal and private?

Microsoft, IMO, you are turning windows into yet another steaming pile of excrement among your portfolio of steaming piles of excrement that you try to pass off as legitimate products.

I'm 74 years old now. I had to work hard and use my brain in order to make a moderate success of my life.
I've use Windows for decades. But having just installed Windows 11 ( IOT version, thankfully -which in itself is bad enough), I can say that I am seriously planning on abandoning ship. I plan to give Linux a try. I'm tired of all the diarrhea being spouted by all these know-it-all 'techbros'.

These overpaid, over-indulged AI *****s are just constantly smelling their own farts. Jeez........Do they actually think that even 1% of Windows-users want this crap on their computers??!!

You are wise, we got tired from the dummy engineers that their own goal is to go on pension before their 30ies.

A principle from game design is being forgotten: actions should be rewarding in a tactile way. For example, in Diablo II, everything one clicks has a low-level reward, from the sounds to the dying animations of monsters; and the designers did this consciously. Microsoft, in their Redmond genius, wants to strip away this tactile work and reward from the OS.

I only wish Linux could stop being such a "nerd" OS and truly compete with Windows, specifically in Gaming and easy of use for non-tech people.
So, you want Linux but you dont want Linux?

For non techie people, there is no functional difference between desktop Linux or Windows. Both run Chrome. that's about all non techies use anymore. 70+ year olds can log onto their Facebook just fine with Linux and have been able to do so for years.

for Gaming, Linux doesn't need to change. The industry has to change. The industry needs to target linux as an OS available for use. That's it.

What we don't need is people coming in and attempting to morph linux into some corporatized entity. We already have that, it's called MacOS. If you want to game, use Windows. If you dont want the AI stuff, either learn to configure windows or use Linux and learn the nerdy stuff. It isnt hard to do, you dont have to be a genius to install Steam and play games on Linux.
I'm with the majority as far as not wanting AI be forced on me but it seems most commenters are ignoring the fact that MS is only one of many, including Apple, Google and others, who are trying to shove AI down our throats!

Most commenters are NOT ignoring the actions of others. What an odd thing to say. Any article about Google or Apple's AI actions are full of just as much complaining. Why you would expect to find comments about Android AI-ification in an article on Windows is beyond me.

And you know what the difference is? Android is a Google product. Nobody expects Google to respect privacy. Apple, OTOH? When I set up my new work phone, and it asked me about using AI, I told it "no" and it stopped. It didnt try to re enable it later, or annoy me, or sneak it in anywhere.

Microsoft, OTOH, doesnt understand boundaries. It keeps trying to install CoPilot, shove it into office, shove it into search, and needs constant maintenance to keep it away. THAT is what pisses people off.

At this point it might be better to have a dedicated gaming version of the OS, like Home and Pro and Enterprise, we should have a Gamer version with kind of win7 like experience.

The Gamer version already exists and it's called Enterprise LTSC... it could still have even less bloat and better, more optimal defaults, I still have to do plenty of debloating and optimization for a fresh install of Enterprise LTSC from a standard MS iso. But it's the closest there is to a Gamer edition.

I wouldn't wish Pro editions on my worst enemy, Home is actually less bloated. Pro used to be fine but since Windows 10 it's a trainwreck.

Linux overall just fails to cross into mainstream for everyday people. That day will never come until AAA game studios target Linux first and not as an afterthought. The consequence is that we have to continue to put up with MS's BS.
Chicken and egg situation.
Why as a developer make games for Linux when only a minority uses it.
Why as a gamer use Linux when games aren't made for it.

The situation is changing though. WINE was the way to do it for ages but very flakey in what games actually worked. If they did one patch later it might not.
Valve put considerable effort into Proton and games basically run unless they're using anti cheat with dubious kernel level activities...

With Windows 11 not being able to run on machines without tpm (officially). Windows 10 support ending. Windows going in a direction people did not ask for...
I wouldn't be surprised if Linux steadily grows year over year and once it reaches 30 percent or so it starts getting official support. Especially from games in something like unreal engine where it should be rather trivial to add yet another build target.

Am I the only one that found the question put at the end of this article as tone deaf?

The article is about Windows continuing in the wrong direction and the question put forward is "Will using a mouse and keyboard in Windows feel as outdated as DOS by 2030?", with neither available answer being worth a damn.

Oh and for DOS being outdated, then for sure in many aspects only with DOS you had control, you wasn't fighting an AI, your data wasn't uploaded to a "cloud", there was no ads and you controlled when updates/changes was made to your system... Seems to me the question at the end of the article should have been "Is Windows 11 unequivocally an improvement over DOS? Yes or No?" or "Windows 11 or Windows 7 with safety updates available. Your choice?"
