Most current AI tech is 90 percent marketing, says Linus Torvalds

I'm looking forward to the next AI Winter. There is interesting technology but way too much hype. There is an AI button on everything now, an AI thing on every web site, come on people we know how to cut and paste if we need to. It should be a felony punishable by summary execution to utter the word "Copilot" in any context other than operating an airplane.

Investors are beginning to demand when there will be returns on their hundreds of billions of investments and the answer is... look up Dr. Lexus (Idiocracy).

There are only 5 large 'AI' hardware buyers and they're in a hardware race. Once that race ends we will find uncountable useless 'GPU's' on the market begging for buyers.

When the marketing AI bubble eventually does burst, hopefully the technology itself won't become anathema and dropped by companies as the pendulum swings back.

There's too many serious uses in medicine, engineering, energy, chemistry, computing, etc, etc. This is where it will really show it's potential long term. Getting AI to write our words, paint our pictures, make our movies and basically suck all the creativity out of life is where it will come apart. We really don't want or need it for that, though they'll keep pushing for a while yet.

Whatever the promises are, AI should never be use for what we can do, but for what we can't do. It's like a car. If you use the car to travel 500m, you just don't use your body as you should and you're going to deteriorate. But if you use your car to travel 50km it makes sense. People nowadays can't calculate anymore nor spell a word. As you say AI could be used for progress. Sadly, I believe it will be used mostly for control. And little by little, the mass will loose their humanity.
