My Cd-rom/DVD write will not read any kind of discs

I have a standard Sony CD-rom and a new LG DVD writer and they are hooked up properly and I've checked all the settings. Windows detects them and says everything works properly, IDE drivers are fine, both drives will spin a disc and then stop and say there is no disc loaded. I've tried tons of different discs, they will both only read a disc if I restart with a disc already loaded but only the first time I try, after that they won't read any more period. I'm completly stumped, I know a lot about computers. It's a newer system with xp sp2. Any suggestions for me?

THanks

My in-laws are having the same problem right now, except they can't get any discs to work. Not even their Zip drive, cd drive, or CD-RW drive. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but will next time I'm over there....not sure when that will be :-( I'll let you know what I find out.

Thanks for the response, I ended up re-installing windows and everything is working now, I don't know what the problem was.
