PC Suddenly shuts down, then Theres a boot disk error, What Happend?

I'm using a Hp pavilion pc on a windows XP os, and i was working in photoshop, when without warning my pc shuts down, i could care less about the lost picture, i just want my PC to boot, now it seems that it's only a booting problem, not a running problem. I've considered a soft restart by pressing F10 when the splash screen appears but i don't know if that will cause a loss of data on my C:, but i can't boot to back anything up OR even get to safe mode...... help....
