In brief: Rockstar Games is poised to bring Red Dead Redemption to even more platforms in the near future. The Entertainment Software Rating Board recently published ratings for the epic horse opera for Nintendo's Switch 2 as well as the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series, suggesting a launch may be imminent.

Rockstar hasn't shared any official news on the matter as of this writing, but it's likely just a matter of time before we get an announcement.

Red Dead Redemption arrived in 2010 as a successor to Red Dead Revolver and was followed by Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. The game launched on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and was eventually ported to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch in 2023, followed by the PC in late 2024. A version for Android and iOS mobile devices is due out on December 4, 2025, courtesy of Netflix, and will be free to play for subscribers of the streaming service.

It's unclear if the PS5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2 version will be a remaster or a direct port of the original. A remaster optimized for newer hardware seems like the obvious path given the game's age and availability on older platforms, but we shall see.

Many gamers would likely welcome a remaster, especially in the wake of Rockstar's decision to delay Grand Theft Auto VI for a second time. The highly-anticipated game was on track to launch on May 26, 2026, but has since been pushed back to November 19 to give the developer more time to add finishing touches.

The upcoming version of Red Dead Redemption is rated M for mature due to blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, strong sexual content, the use of drugs, and strong language. The ESRB listing also mentions a "zombie plague," so it's likely the release will include the game's popular Undead Nightmare expansion.

A next-gen port for the sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, has also been rumored, but we have nothing new to report on that front at this time.

For some reason the naming of this series confuses the hell outta me.

So it's Revolver -> Redemption -> Redemption 2 right.

And Redemption got a remastered release in 2024 as well?

So why is this news? Does the author mean to say Revolver or is the remaster of Redemption from 2024 now releasing on PS5/Switch2 and that's the news?

It's a weird situation. The remaster originally released for Switch 1/PS4. Xbox had to make do with the 360 back compat version. The Remaster was then updated on PS5 to support 60fps, but I'm not sure about increased resolution or anything else. The remaster is now being properly released on Xbox, and getting upgrades on Switch 2 and PS5.

Not accurate.

The Xbox One got a full backwards compatible version in 2016 (which is completely missing in the article lede). And it was a big improvement on the 360 version, basically the best version available at the time.

The PS4/Switch ports are just that, ports from the original version... except that unlike the Xbox One backwards compatible version it wasn't a free upgrade from the previous gen. And the Xbox version released a good 7 years before the natively ported PS4/Switch versions. There's also a 30fps cap on the PS4 version - no mention of anything faster on the existing port, even on the PS4Pro/PS5 (Digital Foundry specifically mention that limitation).

Last year's PC version is a remaster of sorts, with 144fps and higher resolution support. All the links I've added are for contemporary Digital Foundry articles on the various versions. To summarise the links:

The Xbox One version was a big improvement over the original release. The PS4 version was a minor upgrade to the Xbox One backwards compatible release while still not always even hitting 30fps (unlike the Xbox One BC version). That's based on testing with the PS5. And the PS4 port took 7 years and cost $30, vs a free Xbox upgrade version.

The PC version is a big improvement with support for framegen, ultrawide resolutions and a 144fps mode (which is technically a max but can be unlocked with a mod). From what I've found no previous version goes above 30fps so the PC version is a massive improvement.

I suspect that the rumoured Xbox Series/PS5 releases mentioned in this article are ports of the PC remaster but with more restricted graphics options. tbh I'm struggling to see the point of these newer ports unless the old ones get delisted...

tbh I'd have preferred a GTA IV remaster. But I'm sure it's GTA VI that's been delayed for a 2nd time.

Id have preferred they remade GTA 3 and the rest of that trilogy for that matter, no need to add a voice to our hero Mr Mute.
Better graphics and ray tracing paper
