Revisiting the Radeon R9 280X / HD 7970

All those games run fine on an R9 280X, PUBG was discussed in the article and Titanfall 2 is extremely easy to run. This card also plays AC syndicate relatively easily. If you're the least bit realistic with quality settings at 1080p the 7970/280X works very well as expressed by numerous people in this thread.
Where am I going wrong then? I can’t get Assassins Creed syndicate to run at 60fps at 1080p no matter what settings I use.

And titanfall 2 does run at 60. But the textures look so muddy that’s it’s disorientating.

These can affect 280X xfire setup

The power supply not being able to supply enough juice. The total wattage is not the only consideration. The individual voltage ratings are important as is which rail is used if a split rail design.
At 1080p the CPU plays a bigger part.
The MB power regulators might be overwhelmed.
There are some games where xfire runs slower, so must be disabled.
As stated above you can put them up on eBay and get good response and good dollar.

I have a pair of these in crossfire. I think they suck! They were good but I should have replaced them last year.

I’m curious as to why it looks like only easy to run semi popular games were tested? Try running AC syndicate on this card or Titanfall2. Or even PUBG? Don’t see why that game wasn’t tested? It’s like the most popular game ever!

Tried running those games at 1080p *without* Crossfire?

Damn, Tahiti really did she well. The gtx 680 was actually closer to the 7950 than the 280x even with the rare 4gb version.
Combined with amazing compute performance, these will go down as one of the greatest gpus of all time.

Great article, Steve!

Agreed, looking forward to AMDs next first generation of a completely from scratch new arcitecture. =)
(Whenever that arrives, 2020?)
