WTF?! Not for the first time, someone has proven that you can still find hardware bargains in thrift stores. On this occasion, a Redditor discovered an AMD RX 5700 XT, which can sell for over $500, for just $4.99 at their local Goodwill – and all it needed was a bit of work on the cooler.

Reddit user u/12kdaysinthefire writes that the $5 Asrock Phantom Gaming Radeon RX 5700 XT they discovered was still in its original retail box at the Goodwill store.

The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT originally launched in July 2019 with an MSRP of $400. Some models are still going for over $500, so to find one that's 1% of that amount is a spectacular discovery.

It's likely that the price reflected the state of the card. The previous owner had done some modifications, including replacing the pads and thermal paste with copper blocks.

The buyer gave the Radeon some TLC: adding new thermal pads salvaged from an old card, applying fresh thermal paste, and reassembling and cleaning the cooler. Afterward, the X 5700 XT worked without a hitch.

In this era of eBay and online marketplaces for used goods, stumbling upon a bargain in a thrift store is becoming increasingly rare, but it does still happen.

In June 2025, another Goodwill shopper bought a PC from a store for just $30. It turned out to contain an MSI RTX 3080 Ti, the Founders Edition of which had a $1,199 MSRP when it launched in June 2021. The system was also packing a Ryzen 7 3800X.

An arguably even better find happened last month. A Redditor paid $600 for a PC from a pawn shop that had a Zotac 4070 Ti Super inside.

That card alone usually goes for around $800 on second-hand markets, but the price looks even better when you consider the PC also had a Core i9-14900KS and 64 GB (32GB x 2) of T-Force Delta RGB DDR5 6000 inside. At the time, that RAM was going for almost $700 on retail sites. With the memory crisis showing no signs of abating, it's even more expensive today.

Thats good value. With FSR 4 support, it would have been so much better tho.

A 5700 XT is a 2070 Super level of performance. I'm not sure it is "still capable" by modern standards. According to TechPowerUp, it's sub 60FPS at 1080p

Not even, closer to 2060 SUPER - 5% between them
But 2060 SUPER has DLSS 4 support and 5700XT don't have FSR 4 support and that made a huge difference in terms of longevity, since FSR 3.1 and older is not really worth using

Crypto boom days those were going for well over $1k.

Got a 3060Ti at the time for about $380. Gave it to my brother and told him to sell his 5700XT on ebay and put the money towards the surrogate they were saving up for. I think they got about $1100 for it.

While not a stellar find, still a good GPU for 1080p gaming. Might see a couple more years of driver support for it.

But for $5.00, who cares? It can probably be resold on e-bay for far more than what was paid for it, and the profit, however much that is, could be reinvested in a more modern card.

Most people who use older GPUs know not to use Ultra settings. It's easily a 60 FPS GPU on most titles with lower settings.

The fact that someone donated a 5700 XT in the original box to Goodwill is the real mystery here. Either an angry ex was cleaning out the house or someone had absolutely no idea what they had.

Far more? Like 50 dollars? That might even be too expensive

If you could replicate 5 dollars turning to 50 dollars fast, sure but this is a single card

Depends on game selection, and age

Here, at 1080p, 5700XT is 5% faster than 2060 SUPER and 2070 SUPER is 9% faster than 5700 XT.

Also, DLSS 4 support on the RTX cards will be insanely valuable today

I would much rather have a 2060 SUPER 8GB than a 5700 XT simply due to DLSS 4 being vastly better than FSR 3.1 and older. Day vs night difference in both visual quality and game support.

DLSS is literally gold for longevity. I know people playing brand new games still on their RTX 2070/2080 series GPUs today, 8 years later. Full support for DLSS 4, using preset k, simply looks outstanding and boosts fps by alot.

People who think VRAM is the only important metric for longevity, needs to rethink reality. Upscaling is crucial for good longevity. Good upscaling that is, with actual massive game support = DLSS wins with ease and AMD still have alot of work to do. While FSR 4 is good, it lacks support and DLSS 4 is still alot better overall, in both visuals and support.
FSR 3.1 and older is barely worth using and even DLSS 2 from 2020 is much better. However all DLSS 2+ games can be upgraded to DLSS 4 or DLAA with a few clicks.

I own Radeon 9070 (HTPC) and RTX 4090 (Main) and tried them all, side by side, in multiple games, many many times.

AMD is not always turning in to Fine Wine, just ask people with RDNA 3 and older... A friend of mine bought 7900 XTX due to 24GB. He thought it would age like wine. However, he felt abandoned when FSR 4 hit and the RDNA 3 GPU even struggle hard in newer games, with RT elements etc. No FSR 4 support for Radeon 7000 was a big mistake but hopefully AMD learned from this
