Sony Vaio Laptop won't load desktop?

[CENTER]When I start my laptop up, the screen goes black and all you can see is the cursor. Everything seems fine up until that point. I've tried running Safe Mode to see if it did anything and it does the same thing.
I have virus protection. I forget what it's called though ...
I've never had any problems with this laptop, and it's only a year old.


P.S.

I don't have any software.
What are my options?
Do I HAVE to take it in to a computer repair shop? Or is there something that I could do myself? I'm somewhat computer savvy.

If you have your Windows CD, try and run a repair installation.

Welp, unless you've got a recovery partition, I'm not sure what else there is to suggest apart from either taking it to a shop or buying a copy of Windows and hoping for the best.
