The big picture: Nintendo's success in dodging supply constraints has turned the Switch 2 into the fastest-selling console in the company's history. New data confirms this in the US, where the Switch 2 was the only console to drive growth in hardware spending in July.

According to Circana and Sensor Tower, the Nintendo Switch 2 sold 2 million units in the US between its June launch and the end of July, outpacing the original Switch's early sales by 75%. Nintendo's new handheld console singlehandedly fueled annual hardware spending growth during one of the best Julys for the video game industry in decades.

Total hardware spending across the industry reached $384 million, up 21% from last July. This marks the strongest July for hardware since 2008, when spending topped $441 million.

Hardware - Nintendo Switch 2 has now surpassed 2 million units sold in the US life-to-date. It is currently 75% ahead of the unit sales pace set by the original Nintendo Switch.

However, all other consoles declined significantly year-over-year last month. PlayStation 5 sales fell 47%, the original Nintendo Switch dropped 52%, and Xbox Series consoles plunged 69%. Unsurprisingly, the Switch 2 was the best-selling console, with the PS5 in second place for both July 2025 and the year to date.

The trend echoes the Switch 2's worldwide record-breaking launch in June, when it sold 3.5 million units in four days to become the fastest-selling console in Nintendo's history. Global sales have likely surpassed 6 million by the time of this writing. By comparison, the original Switch has sold more than 153 million units since its 2017 debut, though its launch was constrained by supply shortages.

Donkey Kong Bananza was the highest-selling physical game on Nintendo platforms in July and the third-highest-selling title overall, trailing only EA Sports College Football 26 and the 2025 EA Sports MVP Bundle. However, when including digital and bundled sales, Mario Kart World would likely rank near the top, as Nintendo has confirmed it is the most popular Switch 2 game.

Other strong performers in July included Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 and Grounded 2. Meanwhile, Elden Ring: Nightreign fell sharply, dropping from first place in June to 16th.

Overall spending on games and content rose slightly year-over-year in July, but by single digits. Accessory spending fell 8%, and all categories outside hardware remain slightly down year-to-date compared to 2024. The year's top-selling games so far are Monster Hunter Wilds, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and College Football 26.

In total sales and content spending, the market grew by single digits year-on-year in July. However, spending on accessories fell by 8%, and all categories outside of hardware spending have declined slightly year-to-date compared to the same period in 2024. Monster Hunter Wilds, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, and College Football 26 are 2025's top-selling games so far.

I cannot help but feel the numbers are questionable. Switch could not sell well only because there’s limited supply. I remember I could not get one for months, likewise for PS5 which only had better supply more than a year after it launched. Switch 2 however is readily available since launch date. In fact it’s in such abundance that I have seen prices gone below MSRP almost all the time. As for game sales, I mean let’s be real. Mario Kart World is bundled with the consoles. It makes little sense for anyone to buy Switch 2 without it bundled since there is no new Mario game to complement the launch. So measuring it as best selling is kind of moot. It’s the same kind of metric where laptop sellers are saying AI laptops are selling very well, but in actual fact, almost all laptops sold are marketed with some fluffy AI/ NPU. So it’s just data skewed to make something look better than it is.

This only means the Switch 2 will get stagnant sales performance even sooner as most people interested have already bought it making it more likely to see Nintendo dropping the price within 2 years. 👍😁👍

I appreciate the steps Nintendo took to ensure that scalpers got screwed. Switch 2 was readily available in my Target, Walmart and Gamestops in the area. I ended up buying 3 on day one. 1 for myself and 2 for the kids. Gamestop got restocked very quickly by the next weekend. Target sold them 1 per customer and got restocked within 2 weeks.

I am also glad I needn't worry about buying iPhone 17. Apple has killed scalping by forcing preorders and then validating ID physically.

If only Nvidia took such measures to crush scalpers.

I love all the haters for their fastest selling system ever. Even if you dont like it, its hilarious watching the cope.

The console was available readily outside of like 1 months time. Nintendo actually did a pretty good job on this one.

Wild. What are people playing on it??

Nintendo actually did a number of things right with Switch 2. The Switch 1 library was already large and the games are steadily cheapening. On my Switch 2 I can play, Mega Man/X Legacy Fortnight, Gradius, R-Type, TMNT, Contra compilation and Shinobi. It's an awesome system and the backward compatibility is fantastic. I'm waiting for compilations of Metroid, Castelvania and other games from my childhood from Sega or Turbo Graphyx 16.

Are you a paid shill for Nintendo? You seem to be in love with their garbage hardware that's 5 generations behind everyone else and has a ridiculous price tag. I'm not sure I believe all the praise you spew or the fact that you bought 3 of these overpriced monstrosities on day one. You keep praising 20-30+ year old games that you can play for free on any phone, tablet, computer, console, etc. using an emulator. Like somehow it's worth spending $500+ so you can play games you already played when you were a kid.

LOL some of the people in this thread:

YES
Regular checks come from Nintendo, Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Intel, Alienware, Mercedes, Cadillac, Sketchers, Freewing, Vizio and Lamborghini to promote their products.

The funny thing about making a wild claim like buying 3 on the same day is that I actually vlogged it. Beauty of Youtube is no matter how wild a claim is, you've got evidence lol.

I can play them on my Switch 1 & I didn't need to spend £400
