What just happened? Chinese tech giant TCL has unveiled the Tab 8 NxtPaper 5G, an Android tablet featuring its proprietary NxtPaper display. The matte, full-color screen mimics the look of ePaper, marking TCL's second tablet to adopt the technology after the NxtPaper 11 earlier this year.

The Tab 8 uses TCL's NxtPaper 4.0 display, reducing glare and mimicking the paper-like look of e-readers such as Kindles and Kobos. However, unlike e-Ink, NxtPaper delivers a full-color experience, aiming to combine the best of both worlds in one device.

The tablet supports multiple display modes for different uses. Regular Mode suits video streaming and social media, Color Ink Paper balances color with eye comfort for comics and graphic novels, and Ink Paper mimics an e-reader for extended book reading. An additional Eye Comfort Mode uses AI to automatically adjust display settings based on what the user is doing.

The Tab 8 NxtPaper features an 8.7-inch 1340 x 800 NxtPaper display, which TCL says uses "nano-etched layers" providing an anti-glare surface. The device also includes DC dimming and reduced blue light to ease eye strain, with the matte finish making it comfortable to use in any lighting conditions.

Under the hood, the Tab 8 packs a MediaTek MT8755 SoC, paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, expandable up to 2TB via microSD. It includes an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera for selfies and video calls, and a 6,000mAh battery that TCL claims can power the device all day on a single charge.

Additional hardware features include 5G connectivity, dual speakers, and dual microphones with noise reduction. The tablet measures 7.76 × 4.91 × 0.35 inches (211.88 × 125.58 × 8.35 mm) and weighs 11.82 ounces (365 grams). On the software side, it ships with Android 16, providing the latest features and security enhancements.

The TCL Tab 8 NxtPaper 5G is currently available exclusively from Verizon for $199.99. Total Wireless stores will begin carrying it later this year, though TCL has yet to provide an exact release date.

I can vouch for the TCL NxtPaper series.

I only bought one, which is the NxtPaper 14, which is a 14" android tablet that can switch between normal mode, e-ink and color e-ink mode.

The e-ink modes are are almost exactly like the real ebook readers, though it's not using the same tech.

Since it is normal screen based, the page turning and displaying is very swift, just like a normal tablet, and at the same time, it has the eye-pleasing effects of an e-book screen tech.

And, I am really impressed with the battery. It's almost like using a real non-android based e-reader like kindle or Kobo. The last time I charged my NxtPaper tablet was about 3 weeks ago. The battery now is at 65%. This is after occasionally reading everyday.

I have downloaded all my favourite DOS games manuals into it, and I use it to read while playing, just like the old days.

For me, NxtPaper is the best of both worlds - the power of android, and the readability of a real e-book reader and battery life.

Hilarious. Guess what? Your TV is... CHINESE! Your phone? CHINESE! Most likely 90%+ of every piece of technology in your house is Chinese. You should pass on all of it!
And it will continue to be Chinese until demand for non-Chinese made goods start to impact production.

The whole US vs China thing blinds people to the issue of having all your eggs in one basket. Having China as the world's factory is a liability for the world, not just the US.

There are tons of skilled engineers in China and they make tons of great things, but the CCP is a liability for everyone. We need to diversify manufacturing and decentralize it from China. Anything could happen to any country where goods are manufactured which is we need multiple nations with skilled manufacturing, not just one.

Forget manufacturing in just a single country, we need manufacure goods in every country on every continent. It seems like people have forgotten the risks of manufacturing everything in one place that we all experienced during COVID when the supply chains broke down.leaving store shelves empty.

It really has nothing to do with China being China, it's more about fixing the global economy to make supply chains resistant to disruption.

Who makes it is what I am referring to NOT where!! Wise UP

It has an 8 core Cortex-A53 and 4GB of RAM. The A53 is a low power core from 2012. It's going to be awful for anything beyond reading books or streaming video. They should be paying you to take that e-waste off their hands.

There is a big difference between Chinese Chinese and Western shipped to China to be built by cheap labor.
I remember an interview with Huawei boss, he said how much he respects apple and how much they learned from it.
Chinese people value Apple products, they buy them despite National products costing less due to subsidies

It seems you missed that the thing isn't meant for gaming. It is really about the screen and it being fast enough, which saves you from paying for performance you don't use when reading.

An A53 isn't fast enough, that's my point. You're going to have UI lag with that kind of chip. It's worse than what they put in those god-awful $50 streaming sticks.

Dunno. That of course depends on what you want the thing for. I can see it being an e-book reader, used for light browsing and stuff like that so I think it will be fast enough. I am for sure considering getting one, only thing I would have liked it to be a bit bigger - like maybe 14" or so.

I'm only using it for reading and it's perfectly fine for that. Don't expect to game on it for sure though.
