Tesla finally launches Full Self-Driving beta 9

Ridesharing. You need to get from A to B but do not need to own a car to do it. You simply call up and the car comes. That car then goes back on road picking someone else up. Quite economical this.
You are at a pub/too drunk.
Cars going back and forth between locations to offload packages/gear.
Medical emergencies.
Not wasting HOURS of manual driving when you can do more important things like working/playing games during the journey.

Cars will be fully autonomous and it's happening quick. Within the next decade this will be a norm. The only hazards will be suicidal pedestrians and potentially hacking.

Yes aircraft are much more complicated than land vehicles.
If you read again, I said "Full autonomy, yes."
But I was quoting you when you wrote I was "too limited to not see the benefits of self-driving."

Self-driving has no benefits. Unless the car makes you French toast.

Self Driving and Autonomy are the same thing, we are playing semantics here now. You knew what I ment.

Probably will.

Self-driving cars have a driver that is supposed to keep an eye on things. Just like auto-pilot.

Autonomous cars have no humans on board. Those are the definitions of the US National Transportation and Safety board. Please take it up with them.

EDIT:
Let me just pick a few more nits here, though it is laid out.

QUOTE - "Based on these policy definitions, an autonomous vehicle at levels 4 and 5 certainly is self-driving, but a self-driving vehicle at level 3 is not autonomous as it is limited in the operating environment and requires a human driver that can take control when needed."

And self-driving has no benefits.

To be fair, I wanted to let you know I stopped wasting my time after this sentence. That just may be the dumbest statement of the month.

Unless you meant the giant Roomba from Skynet?

Really? Because letting the self driving car handle everything was exactly what got them in the crashes.
Lol. Don't be dumb. My statement is obviously true, if a little silly. No Roomba had every killed anyone (that I know of. Pretty good chance at least one person has tripped on one and broken their neck) but no Roomba had every saved a life either. Very few Tesla deaths. My own Tesla with my own low mileage driver has saved me from two accidents already. That's just me. Times millions? Surely it has saved many many potential fatalities. And that's just basic AP beta. It should be OBVIOUS that as it improves the death rate goes down, not up. It is at its most dangerous right now, and it is way safer with than without.

But you keep on going with your luddite presumptions.

V bizzare seeing the amount of technophobes and luddites on a TECH website.

There's a reason why the UK Government has committed to pouring millions into autonomous vehicle research, and has authorised self driving technology on motorways. Because yes it is safer.

The benefits for stuff like food deliveries etc are obvious. Automated vehicles that aren't affected by things like fatigue or human error can much more reliably deliver stuff than humans as just one example. This technology has so much potential and promise.

People that are criticising this remind me of people who were moaning when the car was first introduced....

Lol although... If we're just talking about safety, anyone criticizing the horseless carriage back then we simply prophetic. Cars have been one of the worst inventions ever, in terms of death. Even more than gunpowder if it could be said that ICE related pollution ends up destroying humanity at some point (and while that is a bold statement, it is complicated. Imagine if ICE never existed... much of the other pollutant producing industries would have never existed due to having to transport everything in a more costly and/or less efficient manner. Even farming practices either be vastly more simply and less polluting. Anyway, I digress). If I could snap my fingers and change history, we would never need autonomous vehicles. But now that we're here... FULL STEAM AHEAD!

But the thing is when someone is "being silly" there are ways to show it.

I don't have a Roomba, but my Daughter does, and I can assure you its feelings are hurt.
I think you owe it an apology.

Anyway, of course it will get better with self-driving cars as the tech improves, but people put too much faith in them right now. The fact that you deal with it responsibly does not mean everyone does, and a scary number don't.

I bookmarked a IIHS article last year and you may find the facts of the matter interesting.

Hell yeah! ... F* technology advancements! Everything should be harder, because real men don't use robot vacuums!
And take autopilots out of airplanes. I want my money's worth from the crew! Any passenger can land if necessary, duh... watch the movies.

I can't wait for the self-driving crap to fade away.
Lazy, rushed, inefficient development for lazy people who can't wait for the next new thing to take them by the hand and lead them through life is never a good combination.
I can't wait for drivers to be removed from behind the wheel. It would make everything more efficient and safe.

I agree. But not to implementing it before it is ready just because it is nerd cool.
You have to start somewhere, the technology isn't bad and it should work just fine with some more tweaks.

The problem is the infrastructure, it also needs to change to meet the demands of fully autonomous cars. AKA smart roads and street signs that can more easily be read by the car onboard computer and navigation system (the less you have to use cameras to detect and read them the better).

Autonomous cars should in theory fix many of huge issues with cars right now like congestion and reckless/drunk driving.

I really think NTSA needs to put their foot down and demand clear & complete data before allowing these kinds of claims and frankly, outlaw "beta's", especially that are charging absorbent prices without guarantee's. Tesla & Fakebook's' owners have gotten away far too long with lots of promises & even more apologies for their failures. This kind of foolishness simply gives license to everyone else to do the same and it's we, the consumers, that are left holding the bag. Just imagine how long SpaceX will be offering beta space rides .... of course when they fail their probably won't be a plaintiff to have to deal with!
