The Modern SD Card Buying Guide: Sizes, Speeds, and Storage Classes

While I am happy Nintendo- unlike Sony- continues to allow us to use non-proprietary memory expansion, as a Switch 2 owner, I am disappointed that they picked microSD Express over half-sized SSD chips.

My entire collection is digital. I don’t like game cards. I don’t trade games. I got a Switch for the kids and they can use game cartridges, share and trade.

I think the most I’d need for Switch 2 is about 2TB for the life of the system. Easy to get, relatively inexpensive. Fairly priced.

2TB express cards are extremely expensive and hard to get.

Stay away from the SanDisk Ultra for video. It has no Vxx rating and testing of the 1TB version has sustained writes dropping to 10MB/s. This was bad enough to cause a 4K camera to randomly stop video recording.

The Amazon Basics 512GB is rock solid and V30 rated. Filled the entire card multiple times, and writes never drop below 80MB/s.
