Upcoming Nvidia RTX 4070 might have the same core count as the RTX 3070

Rumor mill: Nvidia has so far neglected the mid-range with the RTX 40 series, but that might be about to change. According to a new series of leaks, both the GeForce RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti could be about to arrive and repopulate the most popular segment of the market.

The GeForce RTX 4070 fell off the radar some time ago, but leaker Kopite7kimi has put it back on the map with a tweet listing its specs. Kopite has an excellent track record dating back to the GeForce 20-series and is as reliable as any anonymous leaker. That said, he isn't infallible, and nothing is official until it's been confirmed by someone wearing a leather jacket.

Kopite claims that the 4070 will arrive with the same core count as the 3070 -- but the cores are of a different architecture, and thus improved. The 4070's memory system has been expanded from 8 GB to 12 GB and upgraded from GDDR6 to GDDR6X. The newer memory type has enabled the bandwidth to increase from 448 GB/s to 504 GB/s despite a reduction in bus width from 256-bit to 192-bit. The total board power (TBP) has been increased by 30W to 250W.

The selling point of the RTX 4070 might be its clock speed. Kopite didn't comment on it, but it's thought that the 4070 and 4070 Ti will have a similar clock speed to the 'unlaunched' RTX 4080 12GB: 2610 MHz. That's almost a whole gigahertz higher than the 3070's 1730 MHz.

Possible Specifications

GeForce RTX 4090 GeForce RTX 4080 GeForce RTX 4070 Ti* GeForce RTX 4070*
MSRP $1,600 $1,200 ? ?
Release Date October 12, 2022 November 16, 2022 ? ?
GPU AD102 AD103 AD104
Process TSMC 4N
CUDA Cores 16384 9728 7680 5888
Boost Clock 2520 MHz 2505 MHz 2610 MHz**
Memory 24GB GDDR6X 16GB GDDR6X 12GB GDDR6X
Mem. Clock 21 Gbps 22.4 Gbps 21 Gbps
Bus Width 384-bit 256-bit 192-bit
Bandwidth 1008 GB/s 717 GB/s 504 GB/s
TBP 450 W 320 W 285 W 250 W

Compared to the GeForce RTX 4080, the 4070 is quite a step down. However, the 4080 retails for an outlandish $1,200, so the 4070 could still be good value if it's priced reasonably. In raw numbers, the RTX 4070 has 39% fewer cores than the 4080, three-quarters of the memory capacity and 70% of the memory bandwidth, and a 22% lower TBP. It should have a similar clock speed.

Nvidia is already purported to be announcing (technically, re-announcing) the RTX 4070 Ti at CES 2023 in early January. It might add the 4070 to the roster or delay it another few months until demand for the RTX 30 series has cooled, or AMD has announced its own next generation mid-range offerings.

I really don't see this card at $500 like 3070 since about same specs except memory bandwidth lower.
Next spring or summer maybe we shall see.

I'm selling an AMD Radeon HD 7900 in excellent condition. Let's rename it to AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT to avoid any confusion. Price? It's a steal.

So it's needs 1GHz higher clocks, and faster memory to overcome the gimped bus width. Core count is irrelevant, it what the core delivers that is important. Price will be the key and this will be $649 and 4070 Ti will be $799 IMO.

I saw the leaked gaming laptop prices from Omen and Oh boy!
$2500 for RTX 4070 Laptop. What's even beyond atrocious is that RTX 4070 will have only 8 GB for laptop model!
Ohhh and remember budget gaming? The RTX 4060 Laptop is only $2200.
Across the board around $600+ increase. Enjoy.

For those who don't remember, given below is an IGN page from May 2021 to give basic idea of how absurd these prices are :

I miss the good old days where even mid tier cards like the Geforce 8800GT offered performance that was competitive with the high end 8800GTX at a reasonable price.

Sadly those times are long gone......

It will be too expensive - I expect it was going to be a 4050 or 60 but in their new world order they went for 4070. nVidia saw how much money it could rinse people for during the get-rich-quick-yet-produce-nothing-of-any-true-worth-crypto-bore boom and seems determined to leave it's prices at that level and just give their cards fanciful names. All this, despite the huge drop in their sales numbers since crypto-wankery went down the toilet where it belongs.

I'd love to grab the 3060 Ti GDDR6X, that has 600 GB/s bandwidth. Obviously the 4070 is a more powerful card, but if you just want to game at 1440p especially older games, that 3060 Ti is actually a good deal---if you could find it at any rate. I couldn't. It's about the only 30 series card I'd be willing to buy so late in their cycle.

I'd just grab an Intel GPU if Battlemage is any good and they continue to fix drivers, except I'm on an 6700K system that can't do resizable BAR, not for any technical reason but just because Intel didn't want to enable it. Maybe I'll upgrade the CPU but it seems pointless when I don't really game anymore, all I really need is to run Skyrim with mods, maybe TW3 sometimes.

My next gpu will probably be an amd card. I still remember my card blew up, so I picked up a 2070. Three months later they brought out the super series. Screw nvidia……

After my 1060 died I got an RX 6600. AMD has driver and software issues, especially for dx9. You can kind of work around it with dxvk_async, but, eh, it is kind of a pain. They're not really better than Nvidia.

games get better, more realistic and beautiful. To see all that the way it was envisioned by the devs, you do.
realistic? hahahaha Compare Far cry 3 and 6...then write - nothing has changed! Physics are the same as they were 10 years ago!

physics dont change because nobody cares about physics. graphics on the other hand: shades, realistic sky, light. They all got better. Higher resolution also helped creating a more realistic picture

Physics. Very few people care about physics in games specifically.
Even people who create visually stunning projects like starcitizen did not care too much about physics.
Unfortunately, very few people are interested in realistic physics. I doubt we ll see a game with it any time soon.
