The fan at the back of my tower is making a fairly loud whirring sound on start up. I cleaned it yesterday and the noise went but it's back again today. Is it possible to just disconnect it as I have 3 other fans, 2 on the side and one at the front?
As long as it's not the power supply fan you can disconnect it or replace it. It's not that difficult. You just have to open the case. As a precaution either unplug the power supply or switch it off first.
Thanks for that but I'm thinking it probably is the power supply fan as it is located directly under where the power supply goes in, so guess I'll have to replace it then.
Don't be so sure. The power supply fan is inside the power supply housing. If the fan is below the power supply, it could be the rear case fan. Open up the case and take a look.
