XP home password log on problems

I am running xp home and my system won,t let me log on, instead of going to the welcome sceen from boot up it is going to a screen asking for a user name and password i have never set up a password but it is asking for one and won,t let me in.I have booted up in safe mode and ticked the box in user accouts that says use the welcome screen but when i shut down and reboot it does not happen. HELP!

Thanks. I have tried this but it has not solved my problem I am not getting anywhere.
