YouTuber says he will sue Samsung for dodging 990 Pro SSD warranty replacement amid memory crisis

It would be interesting to know how many warranties have been flippantly fobbed off by Samsung like this recently.
There's been reports of a number of companies doing this with both RAM and storage. They'd rather refund you, then have you have to buy a replacement for 3x the price. The sad part is that Louis might have a tough fight because a lot of warranty terms explicitly allow them to choose to refund you at their discretion.

As the article mentions, Samsung's warranty policy for SSDS says they will refund the current market value of the SSD, not the original price. So Rossman has a really good case here. See below for a link to Samsung's SSD warranty policy.

There really isn't much to see here. Samsung, like many large companies, often starts with the lowest cost resolution they think a customer might accept. That's not unique to Samsung...it's a common corporate tactic.
I know many here believe that a group of balding gnome-like executives in a corporate penthouse office had a lengthy meeting where they rubbed hands and decided how to best screw over Louis Rossmann. But the real answer is much simpler. Some low-level employee blindly followed some antiquated policy -- a policy that was fair and sensible in the past, but isn't today because this is the first time in history where SSDs have appreciated substantially in price. The policy just hasn't caught up, is all.

The thing is, Samsung's stated policy is to provide a replacement at the market value when the warranty claim was filed. They are failing to follow their own policy.

You'll spend many times more than that SSD is worth fighting Samsung in court, then your lawyer(s) will take most of any settlement you get. Take the $300 and buy a new SSD drive and cut your losses!!

And how does that contradict my post? At any point in the last 30 years -- excluding the last few months -- refunding the original purchase price was *better* for the customer, not worse.

You'll notice the one thing missing from this story is any sort of official statement from Samsung. He dealt with a few low-level employees blindly following policy, then decided to springboard that into gaslighting his followers for a million more clicks.

He's a consumer rights activist, it's not about the money for him. He runs multiple non-profits addressing this very issue

The best way to earn a bundle without skill or effort is to start a "non-profit", and pay yourself a huge salary.

Samsung's reliability has been sinking recently. I suspect they are "increasing yeilds" by letting more subpar chips "slip" through QA. That, or they sell the best to data centers and give consumers the cheap ones.
Would you share the documentation you have confirming Samsung's recent reliability? Not doubting you but...

Filing a case in small claims court is fairly affordable. Lawyers are also NOT ALLOWED in small claims cases.

Small claims court is inexpensive and you can't have a lawyer represent you in one just FYI.

If more people went to small claims court these modern practices of companies wouldn't be profitable.
I'm not sure that you are correct in saying that "you can't have a lawyer represent you in one". My e-wife's divorce lawyer showed up when I went to small claims court. He knew the judge by the way and I lost. This was in New York State. Maybe things are different in other states.
