What we know so far: The event that Apple just announced for next week might be only the first of two this month. While the company is expected to unveil its HomeKit refresh on October 13, another event just two weeks later might introduce a new iPad and multiple Mac devices.

Sources have told Bloomberg's Mark Gurman that Apple is planning an event near the end of October to mark what would be its fourth hardware launch of the fall. The star would be the long-rumored touchscreen-equipped MacBook, but other devices are also expected to appear.

Apple has long resisted the laptop touchscreen trend, but rumors of a touchscreen MacBook have circulated for some time. Earlier this year, observers claimed the device's launch was almost guaranteed after testers discovered full touchscreen support in a macOS 27 preview build.

Earlier macOS versions only supported the Apple Pencil and a few touch gestures, so expanding touch support suggests touchscreen Mac devices are on the horizon. Furthermore, giving the iPad a more macOS-like interface likely laid the groundwork for a full-blown touch-enabled macOS interface.

Other hardware details about the new MacBook remain scarce, but it might introduce a new "Ultra" tier to the product line. However, rumors said the same thing about the iPhone Duo before Apple chose its unique name, so nothing is certain. MacBook users also shouldn't hold their breath for a MacBook 2-in-1, as Apple is still expected to keep the lineup separate from iPads.

Speaking of iPads, the October 27 event might also introduce an upgraded iPad mini with an OLED panel. The device would mark the start of a broad iPad overhaul, with updates to the standard iPad, OLED iPad Air, and iPad Pro expected early next year. A budget-priced iPad for kids is also rumored. Additionally, the late-October presentation could introduce M6 updates for the iMac and the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple has already announced one hardware launch presentation for this month, scheduled for October 13. The home-themed messaging in the company's announcement supports prior rumors that a HomeKit relaunch is on the horizon.

To compete with the Amazon Echo Show and Google Nest, Apple is expected to unveil an iPad-like stationary display that incorporates some HomePod features to manage Bluetooth speakers and other smart home devices. These might include a refreshed HomePod, a new HomePod mini, and eventually smart locks, cameras, and thermostats from LG.
