Compared to Atom-powered NAS devices such as the Synology DS2411+, the new DS3612xs and QNAP TS-879 Pro are quite power hungry. Despite being a relatively efficient processor, the Core i3-2100 and the eight WD RE4 500GB hard drives consumed 138 watts under load in the DS3612xs. The TS-879 Pro was slightly more power hungry at 146 watts, likely due to its faster Core i3-2120.
