$300 GeForce vs. $300 Radeon GPU: Four Generations, Head to Head

Good to see AMD actually competing for more than just the scraps.

Hopefully this continues in the next gen.
I don't understand why people think AMD is fighting for scraps, they sell far more(consumer) GPUs than nVidia. It's just in the form of the consoles and APUs. APUs are basically console hardware for PCs, why would they not want to sell one of their best selling products?

We aren't the best sample because we are enthusiasts and typically have about average hardware, but 90% of the market is 60 class GPUs and below. That margin is significantly higher if you include consoles in it

By that logic Intel is the GPU king because they sell far more iGPUs than anyone.

Console sales most likely come down to the CPU+GPU SOC simplicity and AMD willing to sell for cheaper than Intel.

APUs are niche products for users that are OK with last gen GPUs to reach some price/size/thermal threshold. We're still waiting on most RDNA 3.5 APU products to be anything more than vaporware.

The fact is that AMD has largely not cared about GPUs because they were focused elsewhere and were content to be the low cost leader. I think they finally realized the inattention was about to push them out of the market and upped their game recently.

AMD caring again is good because their future APUs and cutdown to 60 series cards both need their tech to keep pace with the market or it won't matter how cheap they make them.

Newsflash: LOLNOPE.

The GeForce division sold $10.2 BILLION in GPUs in 2024. That, for the record, is larger then AMD's client and gaming markets COMBINED. That is APUs, desktop and laptop GPUs, game consoles, all of it.

You could also just look at Steam hardware numbers, where nvidia's individual cards outnumber every current gen AMD user. Or JPR marketing that showed nvidia at 94% of GPU shipments.

Enthusiasts make up a substantial market. It's not 2004 anymore. GPUs sales are either datacenter or us. General consumers are moving to phones for their main source of gaming, and the entire console market combined is smaller then the PC.

AMD is said to be fighting for scraps because they are. The best numbers show they have a whopping 17% of Steam marketshare. Their laptops, consoles, and desktop sales combined are smaller then just nvidia's geforce division. There is no source that shows AMD as a majority market leader anywhere. Even in x86 servers, where AMD has made major improvements and now is making tons of dough, Intel still holds the majority in both volume sales and revenue.

Consoles aren't on the steam hardware survey. And before you reply, why is it that AMD is the base for basically every gaming handheld?

People vote the steam survey when it is convient for them and denounce it when it is not. I'll do neither, but AMD sells more GPUs, they don't generate more revenue from GPUs. The fact of the matter is that they do sell more

AMD does sell more GPUs and it's better to serve 90% of the market. AMD isn't selling $100,000 GPUs to data centers, that's where nVidias revenue comes from. However, your information is incorrect about Intel, AMD has been selling more APUs in recent years than Intel. Which, is actually unfortunate because their new XeSS architecture is actually fantastic.

You have iGPUs and then you have gaming hardware. AMD has been beating Intel in the gaming side for over a decade now.

Gaming handhelds? You mean those things that, combined, sold less in total then the (nvidia powered) switch 2 sold in a week?

Like, you keep bring up "consoles" like its some kinda gatcha, when the switch 1 sold 153 million units. All those are powered by nvidia, not AMD. AMD's consoles combined are only 2/3rds of the Switch's sales.
Perhaps you didnt read this
"The GeForce division sold $10.2 BILLION in GPUs in 2024. That, for the record, is larger then AMD's client and gaming markets COMBINED. That is APUs, desktop and laptop GPUs, game consoles, all of it."
And the majority of their GPU sales are in the same $3-400 realm as AMD's. Their switch chips are dirt cheap. gaming laptops are entirely nvidia now. So where are all these AMD APUs at?

Do you have ANY source to back your claims up? Anywhere? Because every source I can find says you are wrong. They are not selling more APUs, Intel's client sales still dwarf AMDs, with $30 BILLION in client sales in 2024 compared to AMD's $2.6 billion.

Oh yeah, and intel is making up 63% of GPU shipments. They dont have an AI accelerator and their dGPUs have fallen off a cliff, so that is ALL APUs.

Where is this wave of AMD APUs coming from?

Where are you getting this AMD has 90% of the mainstream market? Marketshare reports and Steam survey says otherwise.

I didn't say AMD has 90% of the market, I said that 90% of the market are 60 class cards. But where am I getting these numbers? Well, sales numbers. There is a difference between gaming hardware and simple display adapters, a term that I feel many "enthusiasts" have forgotten.

No gives two shits about AI accelerators. The AI hardware and software in my phone have turned it into the worst product I've ever paid money for. This is far from a unique experience so now I ask, what's more important, AI or a quality customer experience. I know for certain you aren't getting a quality experience from AI, but you don't need to take my word for it, just look at the reviews

I have no idea why you suddenly brought up AI accelerators in phones. Is this you acknowledging that none of the numbers back up what you are saying?

OK, so what do these mean to you?

The first two confirm what I already said about consoles.
Like, you keep bring up "consoles" like its some kinda gatcha, when the switch 1 sold 153 million units. All those are powered by nvidia, not AMD. AMD's consoles combined are only 2/3rds of the Switch's sales.
PS5 80 million units
Xbox under 30 million
Switch 153 million
So that is 110 million AMD consoles to 153 million nvidia consoles. Looks like nvidia is winning in sales. OOPS. What was that about AMD's console marketshare?

And the latter two confirm nVidia is absolutely slaying the market. "Nvidia dominates GPU shipments with 94% share"
You haven't posted any numbers showing AMD winning any sales awards..... Nor any sources saying geforce sales are below AMD's.

So I ask again. Where is the sales data that shows:
I don't understand why people think AMD is fighting for scraps, they sell far more(consumer) GPUs than nVidia.
Please dont tell me you're one of those people who failed 5th grade math and think that because geforce's percentage of profit for nvidia is shrinking means they are not selling GPUs.

It's easy to ignore the states data if you take away AMDs CPU sales and that contribution to their GPU sales. Those sales numbers don't include the pro or the continued PS4 sales numbers.

Look, nVidia makes quality products, but if you want to ignore AMDs contributions to the market then that's on you. I'm at an age where I don't care about gaming, I care about the market. I've been watching the nVidia situation for awhile, they'll die with AI since they have gone all in on it and no longer care about selling consumer products. I had more money invested in nVidia than I have spent on several lifetimes of PC hardware., but their growth is coming to an end and if people don't see that the great AI crash is coming then you deserve to lose your money.

You might be able to call me a fool today, but tomorrow or a year from now I doubt anyone will say a word to me. Further, nVidias stock value does not match their sales at all. Unless you want to hold onto their stock for the next 50 years, you will never see a return on investment at this point. Stock value and actual value are not the same thing.

I watched a review of a handheld with Intel's Apu, I think it was MSI device. I was surprised to see how well it performed compared to AMD's chips for handheld devices.
Why are those APUs not in desktop and laptop CPUs yet? Those could help Intel a lot now in their time of trouble.
I mean, the answer is obvious, they are dealing with technical issues they have delt for years.
Intel should sell a range of CPUs with APU that can rival AMD's

what lots of people don't realize is that Intel is also making data center GPUs. nVidia and AMD are both making them, nVidia certainly gets more name recognition for it, but Intel is making them, too. The thing is that Intel was left holding the bag and got last dibs on TSMC's latest node. I actually think Apple has dibs on TSMC's latest node and everyone else has to wait 12-18 months to get access to it. The thing is that Intel was late to the party and while they have a great product, they don't have the means to manufacture it

What do AMD CPU sales have to do with this? Try coming up with a coherent argument please.

And why would I ignore it? Ignoring it only hurts your argument, because with all their consumer CPU, APU and GPU sales combined....the GeForce division still wins. By a long shot.
Those sales numbers don't include the pro or the continued PS4 sales numbers.
Wrong again.
Sony's 80 million console claim DOES include the PS5 pro's sales numbers. Pro sales numbers are abysmal, BTW.

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/1068...ught-up-to-ps4-even-with-pros-help/index.html

the PS4 shipped 82.4 million units including the PS4 Pro. And what does this have to do with your original claim? Are you now figuring every GPU nvidia sold since 2013 in your argument? Because, uh, perhaps you didnt pay attention, but AMD's sales of GPUs were absolutely abysmal during the PS4 era. This was the era of the 1060 and 1070 outselling AMD's entire consumer product lineup.
Look, nVidia makes quality products, but if you want to ignore AMDs contributions to the market then that's on you. I'm at an age where I don't care about gaming, I care about the market.
Coulda fooled me, since you seem to have no understanding of numbers, market share, or sales. When pressed to provide a source for AMD GPUs outselling nvidia, all you can provide are sources proving the exact opposite.
I've been watching the nVidia situation for awhile, they'll die with AI since they have gone all in on it and no longer care about selling consumer products.
Factually incorrect, the Geforce family sold more then AMD's entire consumer division (this includes CPUs as well) combined and is only $2 billion off of AMD's datacenter division.
I had more money invested in nVidia than I have spent on several lifetimes of PC hardware., but their growth is coming to an end and if people don't see that the great AI crash is coming then you deserve to lose your money.
What does this have to do with your inability to back up your arguments? Where is the sales data that supports you saying AMD GPUs outsell nvidia?

I will happily call you a fool today, tomorrow, and a year from now, because you do not seem to understand anything you are talking about. All you can muster is red herring arguments and random tangents that dont back up any of your claims, then when pressed, you provide sources that clearly show you are wrong.

According to IoT analytics, nvidia holds 92% of the datacenter market, and another 3% is AMD.

Wow look, another nVidia win!
The thing is that Intel was late to the party and while they have a great product, they don't have the means to manufacture it
Are we just ignoring that Intel foundries exist now?

I think it is very regretful for AMD that they could not offer the same level of driver performance for 9000 series GPUs as they have now.
If they had it on release...
But then again, I remember overpriced every last card from AMD and Nvidia were on release. Cursed 5070ti cost 900 dollars, 9070xt were selling for about the same price.

I can respect the effort that went in to making this post, but I say what I say about AMD and nvidia not because I'm a fanboy. I say what I say because I know there are many people here who are investors ontop of their current job and I don't want them to lose their hats. I do 2-3 builds a month for people and almost always go with an nVidia card unless they want a linux build or have some other request.

I'm trying to warn people about how dangerous keeping your money in nVidia stock is. I've warned you. I've showed you that NV is over valued and AMD is under valued. If you choose to ignore my advice or argue with it, that's on you

AMD cannot supply the world with CPUs and GPUs at the same time. The irony is that nVidia and AMD need each other. NV need's epyc CPUS and AMD needs NV AI GPUs to sell their server products. And here we are left arguing in the comments section about that

Let me remind you this conversation started because you claimed AMD consumer GPUs were outselling nVidia's. Now not only have you completely changed to an argument about investors but you also admit that even in your own anecdotal experience, nVidia is selling more in your client builds.

Congratulations, you've played yourself.

If you want to warn people about investments (lol), you should probably find some sources that actually reinforce your viewpoint instead of contradicting it.

AMD And nvidia are made in the same foundries. Having both companies sell doesnt increase supply of available wafers.

You claimed they were, actually. Go claim whatever the hell you want. I don't have time for this nonsense anymore. The were the most valuable company in the US. Multiples have held that title. GE, Bayer, Apple. Their AI is running out of money and depending on VC and banks to invest in them. Keep your NV stock, I'd rather watch people like you lose your hat and house than keep arguing. I don't have the energy for this.

Imagine if Nividia had of made the 3060 Ti 12GB rather than 8, that thing would a cult card and still in demand.

9060XT is doing pretty well and only a rusted on nvid!ot would buy the base 5060 over this IMO but gees pay the little bit extra for the 16GB version, consumer need to stop buying 8GB cards or Nvidia and AMD will keep offering this tripe post 2026 with next gen cards.

Reviews of the Radeon RX 9060XT here and everywhere, at 8GB, rail against the card, recommending that $50 or more be spent for the 16GB version. If money is very tight for you, that extra may be too much. The 8GB is indeed a (budget) pocket full of miracles. It beats just about everything else in this comparison.
