Something to look forward to: The company that recently re-released Soul Reaver and the early Tomb Raider games has now turned its attention toward the original Deus Ex. This new version of one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time will introduce numerous graphical and gameplay enhancements, revitalizing the iconic action RPG/immersive sim.

Aspyr Media unveiled an upcoming remaster of Ion Storm's seminal classic, Deus Ex, during Sony's State of Play showcase at the 2025 Tokyo Game Show. The game will be available for $29.99 on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch next February.

Like Aspyr's recent remasters of Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Deus Ex Remastered will mostly resemble the original version while overhauling the graphics and adding quality-of-life enhancements. Although the PC version has long been available on digital storefronts, this reissue brings the classic action RPG to modern consoles for the first time.

Aspyr has fundamentally altered Deus Ex's lighting, introduced dynamic shadows, updated the textures, and implemented new visual effects. Furthermore, all characters feature new models with increased detail, improved lip-sync animations, and ragdoll physics. Observers on social media have compared the new graphics to the 2003 sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War.

Players who own the original PC version of Deus Ex might find some of the new gameplay features useful, such as autosaves, cross-platform cloud saves, achievements, and modernized gamepad controls. A new user interface scales to 4K displays, and the game now supports ultrawide and multi-monitor aspect ratios.

Deus Ex has enjoyed a vibrant modding community since its initial launch in 2000. Recent fan projects have significantly overhauled the game and even introduced new story content.

For example, the GMDX mod enhances enemy behavior, provides new tools, improves the graphics, and rebalances numerous gameplay systems. Meanwhile, the Revision mod features similar visual enhancements, allows players to toggle various gameplay alterations, and includes a new soundtrack. Anyone who owns Deus Ex on GOG can easily download both mods from their store pages.

The game is also frequently on sale at rock-bottom prices. It is currently available for 97 cents on Steam and 78 cents on Green Man Gaming. Whether owning a copy guarantees a free upgrade or discount for the remaster remains unclear.

Deus Ex was an early pioneer of the "immersive sim" genre, combining stealth, action, and RPG elements with a well-regarded storyline. Aside from later entries in the series, it is also considered a precursor to titles like BioShock, Stalker, Dishonored, Skyrim, Hitman, and Cyberpunk 2077.

A couple of my friends were into this game back in the day, but I was too obsessed with isometric CRPGs and EverQuest to afford it much attention. In modern times, if I wanted something like this I'd go play CP 2077. I do realize that it is a very important game though for depth and gameplay reasons.

A remaster to me looks something like CP2077 not just some polished textures and blocky bodies.
I'll pass till something worth paying appears.

I recently went to replay this and found steam's controller claims lacking (for living room play), so I played Deus Ex Human Revolution instead and am just finishing up my + playthrough.

I loved the game back in the day so I'll gladly rebuy assuming it isn't broken (like many releases these days).

IKR it's ridiculous. Like the Quake "remasters", that look like the same garbage with some fancy lighting effects.

Crash Team Racing, now that's a proper remaster. Or Spyro. Or Resident Evil 1 HD. Or Diablo II Resurrected. Beautiful work done on all.

This, on the other hand, is just a lazy excuse of a remaster. Much like Warcraft 3, or the GTA trilogy.

Fingers crossed that the Max Payne 1-2 and Silent Hill 1 remasters will be great.

You're misunderstanding the terms.

Oblivion, Diablo 2 Resurrected, Warcraft 3, Crash TR, Spyro, RE 1 HD, those are graphical or full remakes.
Quake, Tomb Raider 1-6, Soul Reaver, GTA Trilogy, those are remasters.

Yes, and no. ‘Remake’ is as its name implies, meaning built up from scratch. Oblivion and d2r are not that but dam good remasters as both still run the original engine underneath.

Proper remake examples would include Dead Space and Demon Souls, and the unreleased Skyblivion.

This game in my opinion is just old for modern textures, it just looks weird. It should get a proper remake, but this requires a lot more investment capital than the studio can likely get. The IP itself is in limbo as Embracer group says the franchise is to niche for a new AAA title.

I know the meanings, my statement was correct, emphasis on 'graphical remakes' since only the graphics were remade for Oblivion, D2R nd a couple more on that list.

Another lazy remaster. I'll stick with my modded version. When they bring this up to the level of Cyberpunk 2077 we'll talk.

They remade far more than graphics for Oblivion. Several gameplay changes were made to leveling, progression, archery etc. That is why it sits somewhere between Remaster and Remake.
