Check it out: following much news about Apple's app store's restrictive policies brought out by the lawsuit from Epic Games, Elon Musk briefly called out Apple for taking advantage of their first-mover position in smartphones to create a walled garden. Specifically the call-out came as part of an answer to how Tesla's announcement to open up its supercharger network to all EVs would work.
Elon Musk has started other beefs on earnings calls, which is very unconventional for CEOs to make in an official setting. In May 2018, he complained about analysts making "boneheaded questions" on the earnings call. He again made news-worthy comments on an earnings call in April 2020 regarding his frustration with the state of California's handling of the Covid lockdowns. A week later he later threatened to move Tesla's headquarters out of state over continued factory shutdowns.
The Supercharger network has been operating for almost nine years, with the first supercharger opening in Hawthorne, CA in September 2012. It has been exclusively available to Tesla vehicles during this time and has been important to buyers to facilitate long distance travel. It uses a proprietary connector in North America where Tesla first operated its business, introduced before an official standard for fast charging was completed. The stations in Europe also used a custom connector, though its shape was based on a standardized connector. It later proceeded to retrofit a second connector called CCS to all superchargers in Europe, which came about upon the Model 3's release in Europe. In China, the government-standardized connector has always been mandated.
Today Tesla operates the largest fast charging network in the world, though Volkswagen too has since started investing billions of dollars in multiple fast charging networks.
