HP / Dell / etc. Laptop password help (April - July 2008)

No.1 is to search through these posts. In many cases many models of laptops have been supplied Master numbers and/or details on how to remove the bootup passwords

No 2 option is to always contact Dell (or your laptop manufacture), if you are under warranty it might be a free service; if you are not under warranty they offer a reduced cost. Someone reported the cost was as low as $37 (ouside warranty)

No.3 would be to post a request here. Many members have had replies with the exact solution (sometimes hardware related - shorting out pins, so forth)

In all cases if you feel that nothing has worked successfully from reading previous posts and through member's free support replies, then refer to No. 2 which is by far the most economical solution.

This email support person you are referring to:
Firstly the member was banned for asking for payment of service on TechSpot (against the rules here)
Secondly the cost reported by desperate members, far exceeded any manufacture cost.
Thirdly, is Not the best support solution, without tring the first 3 first. Put it this way I wouldn't email him, especially if this support may be free anyway.

Therefore don't bother with these bad support posts, with contact so and so.
As that would be the absolute last option (not first)

I agree!

@deepdark

what password do you need exactly? system, configuration or (even if it doesn't look so) hdd password?

sorry to say I can't help you with that one but if you read through the posts here and in alot of other threads you will find alot of information around this topic.
there are ways to get rid of the password(s). either by shorting method or with a masterpassword. shorting method depends on your laptop model. have you tried to call dell just as it was mentioned a few posts back?

i've tried calling dell....but no luck they ask original owner information!! my dell brand is D830 service tag 256KP2J-595B and i read that shorting method wont work! also i should purchass a password from 3th party.....???

Tell them!

ie
if you bought it privately, give them the persons name and number
if you bought it from eBay, give them eBay's name (ie eBay) and number
if you bought it from a computer shop, give them the name of the computer shop and number
and so on...

i got it privatly....i gave them the short informations i had about him but he wasn't regestred too!! and that unit is mostly stolen:(

This is what you need to provide:

1. Service Tag number
2. Name of owner as listed in Dell records
3. Original shipping address
4. Original phone number as listed in Dell records
5. The message displayed on screen when computer asks for password. That code is in the format XXXXXXX-XXXX

The info requested in 1, 2,3 and 4 is for verification purpose and number 5 is for generating a master password.

Above information applies to those customers also, whose warranty has expired. The only difference is that they need to contact the voice based support first at 800-624-9896 and pay for one incident support, which is generally around $39.

Your issue about purchasing a laptop from a previous non registered user, is a bit of a worry :( Unless you know the previous previous owners name (well the original registered name)

I believe that this issue of Laptops being sold on and then sold on again is a big concern, I will find out any information about what to do in this case. This process may take a day or two from direct contact with Dell from me.

In the mean time you could try to find out the name (unlikely as that may be for you to do) or state to Dell again that Laptop was purchased from this business or owner. (and that's all you know)

finaly i got my dell working..by paying some $$ to a guy named zakrisaid..here my password 256KP2J-595B password: ti8peiv7, i was afraid to give my identity to dell support! also i was in urgent need of this machin:(

Although stating that system was purcased from eBay or other source will not help the verification process, there is still a way to get the system registered under the name of new owner. They simply need to fill ownership form given at following link.

http://support.dell.com/support/top...tag_transfer?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

This form can also be used to transfer the ownership from an unknown (and unobtainable) previous registered owner also.

This process can take 24Hrs !!! So not much time to wait really :)

Given the amount of $39 (that's THIRTY NINE DOLLARS)

Going to Dell (following the above link) still is more cost effective than other 3rd party options. Also the laptop will be registered to you from doing this (just in case it happens again)

Still the contact Dell option is better.

kimsland, that transfere of the ownership only within USA not for other countries!!!:(

Damn good point.

You might be able to find the same page, for your country in Dell.com somewhere?

Actually I'll look for it myself, hang-on...

I think I found it :)

It's one of these I think:
http://www.dell.com/globaltagtransfer
https://support.dell.com/dellcare/tagtransfer.aspx

Please let me know which one worked, or what country specifically you want.

edit:
By the way my name's Kimsland. Also try to keep your words with proper spelling (ownerchip? never heard of it)

the first link send me to this message :

We're Sorry
