HP / Dell / etc. Laptop password help thread (Jan-Mar 2008)

lol yeah "klick klack"
choose the cd, floppy or usb version. depends on what you can boot the laptop.
if you cannot boot any of this devices try to hit f12 during the dell post screen. this should open the one time boot menu from where you can choose other boot devices.

good luck

Hi challenger745  , and welcome to TechSpot

It is not good practice to post your email address, as you may be bombarded with spam (why people do this is beyond most of us)

You can actually edit your Post above and remove your email. (that's what I'd do)

In regards to your request, you should post all your System Specs and then manually update your Profile.

At which time, someone here should be able to locate proper links to bios information on your computer.

Need Help: Dell Inspiron 1420 Authenticity Password

I just purchased a Dell Inprion from ebay but unfortunatly there was a grey screen that came up asking for an authneticty opassword. I did some searching and found out about the paperclip method, I tried many methods of shorting the eeprom but to no avial. Dell customer support told me they could be of no help without original owners info. so can any one help me, is there a master password that someone can generate, or is there an advanced method of shorting for this particular eeprom? any input here will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks but not as simple as first thought. The D420 is a small Dell machine with no floppy/cd-rom etc. it does have USB ports but the admin password has boot from HDD as the only device so I don't think I am going to get past this. I'll thoroughly check out the DST software you mentioned and see what options they represent. But does not look simple either way. Maybe I have bought a door stop.. :(((

If you feel like you bought a doorstop then sell it to me :)
ok, did you try to access the one time boot menu with f12 during the dell post screen?
but there are a few more options for you. if you have another laptop hard disk drive you could make it a dos bootable drive, just install a dos on it. then put the files from the dst cd on it and put the drive in the laptop. boot the dos hdd and run svctag.exe to edit or delete the service tag.
another option is to call dell and transfer the ownership to you. then they will give you a master password (probably for a small fee - in europe we pay $20 per password).
post back how far you got and if you have questions!

please try forum search function to find some information around this and the right place to state your request plus some more info about which password you need. hint, there are 3 at least passwords - system pw, hdd pw and configuration pw.

While searching, take the time to go to the Dell Website, and change the ownership to you. There is a form you must fill out, and they must verify you and your address, phone, email, etc.... and you must wait about 21 days, on average.
Then you can contact them again as owner... You do not need to know the previous owner. You can even download the invoice (without the owner name) and the date it was purchased.
Within 30 days, part of your problems are solved...
But if you are not the legal owner, Dell then has your address for the authorities, and somebody from your county sheriff office will be by to see you.
You can find it by searching for change of address form, or change of ownership form.

I tried searching, thats where I originally came up with the idea to try the shorting method. I called Dell and they said that there would have to be a transfer of ownership, i gave them all the numbers that they asked for and was given a case number to call back during the correct business hours, I assume that this means that my laptop was never reported stolen or anythiing. Is there any other way of getting around doing this?? I simply cannot afford to wait around for 30 days while Dell pulls my chain, every story I heard on heree ends up in dell finding some kind of way to not give out a master reset.

IIn addition, I run a laptop repair service on the side, so I am very comfortable with the circuitry of this laptop, is ther any other chip that can be shorted out< or any other known internal workarounds?

There is NO guarantee Dell will do anything, once you are a registered owner of the machine. None.
But you have to start somewhere.
Read the volumes of information on this list, and starting doing your contact work.
What you want to do is NOT an easy process, and can take easily take weeks... or months.
The system does not want you doing this. But for many (NOT ALL) models, there are people on this forum who can get you pointed in the right direction.
Some models are darn near impossible to fix... eight of them anyway...
Good luck to you. Even the reading and sorting is going to take a long time... There are easily 500 entries online at various forums on how and what to do... not very many of them are valid... and some of the best have discovered they can make a living fixing this problem.

Thank mscrx. I have checked the F12 option it only presents the HDD then bios and diagnostics. no other choices. I have another laptop and a couple of portable harddrives so I could do anything with these. Problem is that they won't fit the D420 as it has a very small (Pata I believe) hard drive so I could not swop these over. Not sure if I could buy an adapter as mention in the DST site I am not sure if this adapter is only for standard note book hdds. I did not know you could pay dell for this, because when I called them they asked for the previous owner and I don't know who this is so they said they could not provide a password as the unit has not been transferred. But I can call them again if you wish? thanks JD

I've been searching but i'm unable to find anything about this specific model and any methods, i have noticed that the services on ebay list this as a model that they can provide a password for, meaning that there has got to be a known method. Even if somone wishes for me to pay for their help I suppose that that is the cost of knowledge that I don't have.

Like I said I am searching but if you guys know where i should look or even have a direct link, or even search topics that I may not have tried please post your suggestions.

Also I forgot to mention I don't care about the contents on the existing(the one currently in the machine) HDD I wanted to reformat this and reinstall XP etc naturally I would need to get a hold of the appropriate dell drivers but I can get these from their website. So if I could use this HDD it would save problems with connectors etc....cheers & thanks

ok, for the passwords I pay for is company related. we own the laptops and if we need a password we call dell and get it. since 1 year or so they charge $20 per password. thats the whole deal... :)
for the hard disk drive. you could buy an adapter to connect the d420 hdd to a different laptop via usb. there are adapters for pata and sata to usb (all in one for round about $30) then I gues you could install the disk. another options would be to buy a replacement hdd which fits the d420. hdd's are cheap so why not use this and upgrade the diskspace?
and 3rd, the drivers... you can download them from support.dell.com even without entering the service tag. just chosse the model and download every drivers they have. depending on your configuration some will fit and some not. thats it! :)

Thanks I'll check out the adapters and see what I can come up with. I don't mind paying dell maybe I'll give them a call..see if there are more aminable when money is mentioned...

Raybay I think your in this for the money! Guys, it did not take me 21 days to transfer ownership, it took me 2 days. Read all postings before you shell out dough, or contact me,email removed Raybay unless you have been through the process, you cannot comment on something you don't know, unless your trying to make some money.

Hi mcrx the drive in the D420 is a 1.8 inch drive don't think the connectors mentioned will fit...I spoke to Dell today and they said if i fax them the receipt then they may be able to do something for me. But they told me to look for a hash number of something like this when I enter a password in the bios but I don't see anything like this when I enter any old password just the reply 'incorrect password' can anyone shed any light on what they are looking for? thanks in advance JD
