Nintendo says not to upgrade to the new Switch OLED model if you don't care about the...

A hot potato: Nintendo finally unveiled the long-rumored next version of the Nintendo Switch on Monday, and quite a few fans were disappointed. While it does use OLED technology and comes with more storage, the expected 4K support and inclusion of DLSS is missing—even a Nintendo marketer thinks people shouldn’t upgrade if they don’t care about the new display.

The new hybrid device, imaginatively named the Nintendo Switch OLED model, does offer a few upgrades over the current version: the 6.2-inch LCD is now a 7-inch OLED; the 32GB of storage has increased to 64GB; there’s an adjustable stand; improved audio; and a new dock with a wired Ethernet jack.

Where the latest Switch doesn’t differ from its predecessor is the internals. We’d seen reports of support for 4K resolutions, the addition of Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), a new custom-designed SoC with improved CPU, and more RAM, but all are missing from the Switch OLED model.

Replying to a tweet asking if the new Switch offers improved performance, Nintendo of America Manager of product marketing JC Rodrigo wrote: “Nope. Not what’s for. Stick with the current one if you’re not digging the screen.”

Given the number of reports of an upgraded 4K Switch Pro, there’s always the chance Nintendo could release the more powerful model next year when the global chip shortage has alleviated, though such a move would doubtlessly anger those who buy a Switch OLED model when it releases on October 8 for $349.99.

I'm not too surprised, just look at Nintendo's history and they do like releasing slightly different models of essentially the same thing.

I reckon this "switch pro" will actually be the next Switch altogether, I doubt they'll call it "Switch 2".

I heard that the cartridges games come on are limited to 32GB in size, that also limits the usefulness of 4K output if your textures have to be compressed substantially in order to fit.

So disappointed with Nintendo! Is it running out of ideas?
Seems if they upgrade anything hardware/performance wise then the switch will legit compete with ps5/XsX and they dont want that fight so all they can do is small stuff like this.

Bull, we are just looking for enough of a performance bump to port PS4 version s of the current games.

Current Switch has mostly 360-era AAA ports, plus a few heavily-castrated modern games. Last year, the hose or third-party AAA ports dropped down to a trickle (and it will take new hardwae to make it start again)

The Switch will never get ports of GTA5, or Fallout 4., not to mention newer games like Death Stranding and Cyberpunk. The train of compatible with ps4 games will continue for a couple more years (and Nintendo is missing it).

They don't need those games, when their exclusives on one console outsell the likes of GTA on 3+ platforms.

Come again? It was the Wiiu that was full of 360 ports, and look how well that went for nintendo.....oh wait.

Nobody buys a switch with the thought process of "Gee, I hope this has a bunch of PS4 games from half a decade ago!". That strategy has failed for nintendo more then once. Nintendo's market wants mario, zelda, metroid, star fox, smash bros, ece. It also specializes in party games like overcooked and moving out.

What we wanted. Fixed joycons. 4K output support, though not that it matter when games are developed with resolutions of 480p to 720p it would at least help not make the games look smudgy. CPU, memory and GPU increases so that 3rd party companies take the console more seriously and actually make more mainstream games, even first party games framerates are miserable in it's current form.

What we got, a 720p OLED screen nobody asked for, heck 720p was dated when the original launched in 2017. Front facing speakers which is nice, and a whopping 64GB of internal storage...

They didn't even reduce the cost of the 4 year old system. You can go buy a Series X for $300 or a PS5 digital for $400. I get there is a fan base, I was a Nintendo fan as well, though my last system was a Gamecube. The last Nintendo console that actually felt like a console to me. Just imagine what they could be making if they cared enough to put money into research and development. I know I'll get the it's selling well response, I get that, just imagine how much better it could be. I'm not the only one with this opinion.
