problems w pop-ups and desktop wallpaper

Hi,

I have WinXP media center edition, in a Dell dimension. I cannot change my desktop picture. Right now I have a picture and it is stretched, not centered like I used to have it. It will not let me change it. When I go to (desktop Properties) to try to change it; it will not let me select a picture at all, but it will let me change the background color. When I go to one of my pictures and I right click and select set as desktop background, it will still not show it. Any ideas on how to fix this. Any advice will be welcome.

My other problem, I normally use firefox and haven't had a problem w pop ups in a long time, but recently I've been browsing w firefox and an internet explorer window pops up trying to sell me spyware removal tools (ironic, huh?) Both of these problems appeared at the same time, I don't know if they are related. Thanks!

Hi,

Considering the coincidence, I would strongly suggest the following.

Important: Please read this thread HERE before you decide whether to clean or reformat your system.

Should you decide to clean your computer, please go ahead to Viruses/Spyware/Malware, preliminary removal instructions and follow the steps given. These are a comprehensive mix of steps to remove common malware, as well as provide us logs of your system to look at so we can further remove any tricky nasties.
Do follow all the instructions exactly.

Thereafter, please post fresh HijackThis, AVG Antispyware and Combofix logs as attachments into this thread. Do not copy and paste your logs if not it will be ignored and/or removed.

Also, please let me know the results of the AVG Antirootkit scan

i started doing some of the steps in that thread, and on every scan my computer comes back infected w a lot of nastiness. Bc I do some online banking, I decided to stop and just reformat... don't have a lot of important stuff in here anyway..... how do I reformat?

99% certain it's SMITFRAUD.

Try Googling for the removal tool.

If you have that, you probably have a lot more as it tends to disable any antivirus programs

If you look carefully in his last post alondrasp has already stated his decision to reformat his system as he does online banking on it.
In any case, the smitfraud removal tool is actually included in our preliminary removal thread which I advised him to visit.
