Slow CPU?

My cpu is a Core 2 Duo E6600 (2400 MHz) running at 1588.53 MHz. The mb is asus p5b--e. What could cause this?

Have u turned off speed step in the BIOS that will stop the computer from slowing the processor down when the computer is not busy. it may have another name in u're BIOS.

no, I don't think that is happening here. maybe the cpu is just slowing way down, after all, it's nearly 2 years old now.
I'll look at bios, but doubt ill see anything there i want to change.

someone said C1E also has to be disabled as well as speed step - why were these things enabled anyway? Anyone know?
