Ah yes, I didn't think of that. a 3 slot PCI card would be quite something :eek:

Whatever you decide , make sure it's reversible so you can restore the card to original condition when you sell it on ebay to buy the new Sparkle 9800GT PCI (See picture)

That contraption is supposed to take up 3 PCI slots, like the 8500 GT is a space hog. :darth:

Hello people! I must say that I've looked everywhere for answers and this forum seems the most suitable to give me them :p.
Well, my problem is that my laptop switches off but only while playing a game, this game is not even a newest game or anything, is Pokémon yellow with its visual boy advance for pc. Because this happens I assume it's got to do with my graphics card. my laptop is an acer 3000 and my card is the SiS type (SiS M760GX). I just upgraded all my drivers from the acer website, but my computer keeps switching off when I play the game. So my question is, can I change the graphics card of the laptop, or download some drivers or whatever to be able to play the game? or does it switch off because of something to do with lack of ventilation or sth lke that?

Hey Neveth, I think your question would be better asked over in the Mobile section of the forum. I am sure you can most likely get a response with the precise answer you need. This thread is more geared towards the PCI bus video card.

Did anyone have the 6200 pci card and get artefacts with some 2d applications like some games and in pictures sometimes if the card got dust on it.
Is there a fan needed for the card or is there not enough power for the gpu.

Is that really a driver problem or just a 64bit power transfer to the mobo.
 
Whats really strange is with these 2 game demos no problem with Intel 82915G.
But if I use the Pny 6200 256MB pci then I get either artefacts with :

Paperball 1.4


As you can see in the pic it is 2D graphics works excellent with Intel Integrated graphics but not the pci card ?

With our 6200 we got some sky tearing in stalker. If you looked at the sky you got a blurring effect as you panned across with the outline or horizon detail i.e trees repeated across the screen. They used to use this effect on the Top of the Pops on the BBC in the 1970's. In the end it was a driver issue and it vanished when I upgraded my nVidia driver (or went back to a much earlier driver). Which nVidia driver are you using ? I'd be inclined to think it's a driver issue if it just shows up in certain games

yes - a moment of madness. That picture was from google images - my search was 'massive heatsink' which seemed appropriate for the Sparkle 8500GT successor. However my point is that it's worth assuming that one day you might sell a 8500 for the next great card. My 6200 went for more than I paid for it (both bought & sold on ebay)

teklord - how hot are your disks getting when you clock your GPU at 80 C ?

8500 GT could be the last of the great PCI cards and it still pales in comparison to even an AGP card at the same price. PCI is going the way of the dodo as it is many times slower than AGP which is also on the way out and PCI-E. The 8500 GT isn't even sold in America, which demonstrates the interest level in PCI by manufacturers at least. Hope I'm wrong, but I think 8500 GT could be the best PCI card we will see, AGP doesn't have a card in the nVidia 8 series, at least not on Newegg.

As for my hard disk, it is still functional at the GPU temp. It most likely is not as hot as the GPU, but I definitely need more internal cooling, no doubt about it.

worth checking some real values with speedfan though. You may find it's actually fine and the high temperature is localised around the GPU. Failing hard drives is a gradual thing, with the first indicators probably only being detectable using the manufacturers diagnostic disks (or download the UBCD ISO) or through the disks S.M.A.R.T data. Eventually the problems start to show up as errors in the Windows system event log, but that can take a while and may be too late to take an evasive measures.

My final word on speedfan is that it's the only startup program in my task tray, which is as high praise as I can give.

Sage advice jives11, definitely worth a look, no doubt about it. As long as I ease off OC'ing my GPU, I think I am ok in the temperature department, but it is hard not to when playing some of the newer games like HL2 & UT 2004 and you want that silky smooth frame rate.

Just tested out doom 3 on my computer with my 2400 card, damn lol. This game is powerful and seems to be using the same engine from quake 4, just slighly less CPu power. I'm getting like 3-4 fps at most haha.

Oh well, bout to install UT3 demo. I will let you guys know how it runs :)
 
OK well with teklords OC settings I got 5150 in 3dmark03. I used powerstrip to oc the card. I decided to push out to Core 565 memory 500 and this gave me a score of 5380. 5 minutes of ATitool avaeraged 155 FPS. With 3dmark03 There were some minor artefacts in the ragtroll sequence . VGA core temperature peaked at 59 degrees C according to the speedfan graph

this PC has a 400Watt supply and an extra double fan next to the card (see link in signature)
 
Question about overclocking. Also i am using aty tray tools.

Using a Visiontek 2400 HD PRO, here are the settings:

How much should i overclocked and when my temp rise or should i just rise it up a bit?

Also, what are so good safe CPU overclocking tools?
 
I'm not an expert. There are a number of tools you can use.

Rivatuner and powerstrip seem to both be well regarded. powerstrip is very easy to use, though you have to pay for. Rivatuner is more complex, but maybe you can do more with it. According to this link, the latest version lets you oc core, memory AND shader separately.

I think most people increment core by 10% values until they start to hit problems, then ease back by 10%, then repeat the same for memory.

This thread implies that the 8500GT chipset is ripe for OC'ing and I have seen referrence to people running them with 750 core and 1000 memory ! However these are the PCI-E variant, and also probably has a dedicated power connector. I don't know what the naximum current that can be delivered through PCI is

A friend of my son has a Dell which had both onboard graphics and an unoccupied PCI-express slot. I guess they used the same motherboard across a range of models, so the entry level just used onboard, and further up the range you got a graphics card. I also think there are other types of device that can plug in to a PCI-E slot, for example disk controllers or IDE expansion headers. As mopar man so eloquently put it, you are just going to have to take a peek .
 
Do anyone think, the 8500 GT PCI card will get notice in the United States and someone will start to put the card out in the market for us to buy?

The 2400 HD PRO PCI card is wonderful, but i am very curious to buy the 8500 GT for this computer. I couldn't make it out to maryland, so i didn't have a chance to see can i get it, maybe next time tho.
 
I don't know if its the 64bit bus or the card, but i have notice with 2 kinda old games ( one 2001 and the other one 2002 ) they run really slow, terrible.

Does the 64bit inferface have the abilty to view long distance, what i mean is, say i am turn around in a FPS shooter, no enemies, just a wall in front of me, im getting like 50/74 fps, but once i turn around and view everything in front of me and i proceed to go towards it , or move forward, the game crawls and the fps drops to 10-15.

Anyone understand what i am saying?
And btw, those games had no problem playing with my fx5500. Its only 2 of them thus far, and 4 other racing games which i own, i can't play at all anymore with this card. No biggie, because i own over 450 pc games, so those games i will play when i buy my second computer.
