So you only have PCI slots and want to game?

I'm going to wait for one of the newer PCI cards to come out near me, wont order online. Staying with my 6200 for a while though.

What cards are you waiting for, the 8600gt or 9 series? If so, good luck with that. I don't believe any of those cards will make it too online stores.

I am waiting for the evga 8400gs to come out to one of my retail stores, but it doesn't seem like its coming. I know its still early, the card came out like what 2 weeks ago, but still. :( I am buying my secondary computer next month tho, the one i posted in the link.

I am going to travel soon tho, and see what i can find at this computer show that i usually go to when i am out in the area, they should have what i am looking for as for those pci cards.

peace

Tirgerdirect added the 1GB 9400gt:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4369747&CatId=1603

To tell you the truth, i don't want any of these 9400gt pci cards, because they do not have fans. So i will wait until i go to a certain place to see if they have the fan versions.

Anyways: I have 2 questions:

#1 This card is mid height?
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4312749&CatId=1603

#2 Do you think its the same size as this card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143110

I am thinking about going on and buy the BFG 8400GS sometime next month, i really don't mind spending 100 dollars on it. I want the evga version, but it doesn't look like that version is going to show up in stores. And i don't buy video cards online, i like driving to the place, buy it
and get done.

Now there is a computer show i am planning to go to, but they don't have it at that certain place at the moment. So next month is when i am going out computer shopping, so i might end up buying the bfg 8400gs. I just want to make sure its the same size. The dude at the store told me to bring your bfg 6200 and compare it to see if it is the same size.

Just wanted to hear from folks here.

While I understand the reasoning of a fan over a heatsink, given your current rig i dont get why you would omit a fanless card from your purchase.

GPU temps can run very high - safely and a 9400GT is never going to cook your system - which is why they were released with heatsinks in the first place. Even 100 degrees celcius under load is reasonable. I doubt a PCI 9400gt would ever peak anywhere near that high even with overclocking.

I would be more concerned about your ancient system with a 90watt PSU powering any 8 or 9 series card. Even a PCI one.

Um, i think i mention this already, but i had a 8400gs 512mb pci card in my rig already and it work just fine. I had the PNY 8400gs card , which i bought from staples for 84 dollars. I had to take the card back, because it was too big and i am glad i did take it back, because it seem to have mess up my onboard sound, either by me forcing the card in, or from what i heard, some video cards have their own audio and can overwrite your onboard.

Anywho, i never said i was using a 9 series card on my p3. I said my last pci card which i plan to buy is the evga 8400gs. Actually, the evga 8400gs and the diamond 9250. Those 2 are the last 2 cards that i plan to buy. Why a 9250? Well i want the diamond version with 128bit on it, and i plan to get rid of my jaton fx5200, radeon7000, evga 6200, and fx5500. So i will have the visiontek2400, bfg 6200, 8400gs and 9250. :)

I said when i buy my secondary rig next month, this one:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9191545&type=product&id=1218052148213

I am looking into buying either the 8600gt or one of the fan versions of the 9400gt or 9500gt.

Did you ever consider that your PSU fried your onboard sound ?

My onboard sound was fine(since 2000) until i force in the 8400gs in early april of 2008. My PSU never gets warm btw, and my psu is not a issue here. As soon as i put in the 8400gs, everything worked fine, but i notice all these different audio devices in my device manager, i didn't pay it no mind, about an hour later, my onboard sound disappeared.

Nevertheless, my onboard sond only seems to return when i use a sound card, which i am using now. I have the onboard sound disable in bios, don't need it anymore. I have been using sound cads since i had the onboard issue. Using a sound blaster from bestbuy, 24bit live. Works great :)

Update

I am giving up on PCI cards. I am not going to go into details(unless you want to know why) But as of right now, i am going to buy my last pci card early march for my Intel Pentium III, the BFG 8400GS
http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr84512gsp.aspx

And i am also buying my secondary computer next month also
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=9191545

Note: I am only spending 270 on that rig, at another store

I am not using Vista, i have a XP pro disc. I am not into vista right now, or win7.

I don't buy video cards online, infact i am not buying anything online ever again. I have my reasons, but i like buying in the store, off line, drive there, buy whatever you like and get done.

Now that i am moving on to PCIE, I really wanted the Diamond 4670 1GB to be my first PCIE card, but as always they are not sold anywhere offline. So i am kinda puzzle on what i want to buy now. I don't have a budget, but i do have limits. So my limit for a new PCIe card is set at 100. So i will look around in stores the same day i buy my new rig and see what i can buy with it.

Note: I am sticking to the trend tho, i am never buying any card that needs a connector.

I must say, i am real excited. :)
peace, and i will let everyone know when i get it :)

Does the Radeon 4670 have to be Diamond brand? I found a Visiontek Radeon 4670 1GB PCI-E graphics card on Best Buy's website and according to the site, a couple of stores in the San Diego area (Mission Valley and La Mesa) have it in stock at their stores.

Well not really, i didn't even see that. Thanks , i found it:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8992593&type=product&id=1218007083797

Just have to add a few more dollars to it. I am using a visiontek2400hd, and i trust their products. So i will buy it the day i pick up my new rig. I am going to find some reviews on the card, but i know already its pretty good. I am also going to use a bigger CRT monitor, and only plan to game with my new rig at 1280x1024. I think the biggest CRT monitor is 17inchs, not really sure, but i will look into it. Unless i find a cheap LCD monitor.

Peace and thanks again.

My God I never thought I'd see the day. Welcome to 2005.

You can get CRT monitors as large as 22" and 24" but at that point they're not worth the money.

Also, there's absolutely no harm in using a power connector for a card if the power supply has the capacity to power it. That being said the 4670 is no slouch.

But anyway, Visiontek is the best company that makes ATI cards. They have a lifetime warranty and their customer service is supposed to be pretty good.

They have tons of crt monitors at my pawn shop for only 15 dollars. My main gateway monitor for my p3 died last year, i bought one which i am using now, princeton graphic systems from 1996 lolz.

Anyways, i am not going to buy the 8400gs for my p3. Really don't see any point in getting it as a upgrade over my 2400HD(plus its wasting money, the card is almost 100 bucks) Looking at the stats and all, the only one worth buying is the evga 8400gs, but its on newegg so why bother.

What i am going to do is buy the HIS X1550 or any version of the x1550. has my last pci card. That makes more sense, if you look at the stats and all, and it seem more appropriate for my p3/specs. The x1550 core is 550/400 with 12GB of bandwidth. I know where to get one for about 40 bucks.

Anyways, i am going to buy the rig + the 4670 card next month, i will let everyone know when i get it. :)

Keep in mind the x1550 does not support DX10 (not that you can really run it on a 2400 well anyway). Pure performance-wise the x1550 is BARELY better.

Save your money.

Well i plan to keep all my cards for my p3 for backup purposes. But i am using my bfg 6200 as my main card. The 2400HD i put away, as a backup only. But i do want a radeon card to play some of my older games. My bfg 6200 doesn't like those cards very good, and i have a radeon card that works with those cards, the radeon 32mb 7000, however i wanted a different radeon card, a more powerful one.

The 2400HD only plays new games alright, old games, terrible performance. So for my last PCI card, i am either going to buy one of the x1550, or the Diamond Stealth 9250 . Both are cheap where i plan to get them, so i will be saving money.

Peace

You don't need so many "backups". How often do you think these things break?

And what you want doesn't make much sense. Unless you're playing games from the mid 90s or before, any older game should run the same on any card after the Geforce 6/ATI 9xxx series.

Don't waste your money.

personally, i would just eBay off your "backup" PCI cards, you should get enough cash for the three of them to pick up a very nice PCI-E card

FusilliJerry82 , you are right, those games do work. I haven't tested them since my computer has been bottleneck free, and they do work. However, they seem to work perfect with my FX5200, and FX5500, but with my 6200 BFG which i am using now, it kinda struggles a bit.
Anyways, i just feel the need to want to buy one last PCI card lol, but i really don't know what to buy hahaha.

I am going to that computer show sometime mid march, if i see something interesting i will buy it for my p3 as my last pci card.

Peace

I did mention already that i already had the 8400gs in my computer before. It worked just fine. However, as i said i am going to go to the computer show and see what they have and if something looks interesting i will buy it for my last PCI card. I could always buy a new PSU too while i am there. They sell them for under 20 dollars , doesn't matter which one it is, they are always selling them for under 20 dollars.

Last time i was there, they was selling the visiontek x1550 for 30 dollars. So i may end up buying that for my last pci card.

If you get a new power supply, bring your tower with you to see which new one will fit. Either that or take the old one out and bring it with you. It's not hard. It's 4 screws and then unplugging a handful of plugs. Install the new one in reverse order. As long as you aren't jamming a plug somewhere it doesn't fit, you won't blow anything.

I'd get something at least about 300W or more. A power supply that costs $20 is probably inherently not of great quality, and the more headroom you have, the longer it will be able to power everything for years to come. Power supplies that come in computers are generally under-rated and beefy for safety (except older emachines) but cheap aftermarket power supplies are not that way. They're generally overrated and use low-quality capacitors that age faster. Think of a power supply almost like a lithium ion battery in that it can supply less and less power as it ages, only in the power supply's case its due to electrolytic capacitors aging. The lower cost/quality the supply, the faster it will age.

Hi everyone
I would like to upgrade my computer and am look to see what you guys think would be the best thing for my system...

have a hp a1102n system

Would like to make it to where i can play cod4...

Thanks

VNf4ultra should update the first page of this thread with the lastest pci cards, and the last 15-20 pages should be deleted. The thread is getting confusing.
