So you only have PCI slots and want to game?

Trueblue,

You could upgrade to a partially new machine that resuses parts from your current computer that will allow you to use a MUCH better PCIe card, which would be included in the price. I'd be glad to spec and price that out for you, but is transplanting a motherboard, power supply, RAM, etc something you'd be comfortable doing?

Also, how much RAM do you have?

Out of curiosity do you have a Windows XP disc that isn't from HP? Now that I think about it, your system restore disk won't work with a non-HP motherboard.

MSI Barebones system (Case, Power Supply, Motherboard) - $85

2GB RAM: $24

Sapphire ATI HD 4670 - $76

Evercool CPU Heatsink - $8

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835119092

~$193 before shipping (I'd add those to a cart to see how much shipping is, its probably a fair amount)

Take the processor, hard drive, and CD drive out of the old system and you have a complete system that will run COD4 fairly well. If you want to keep the old computer together perhaps to sell, I could spec those parts new for a complete new computer for about $300 total (and you would then not need the heatsink as a new CPU would come with one).

Yeah, take a look what it has in it, or just post the model number if its a pre-built computer.

If it has an AGP or PCIe slot, you're on to something. Otherwise, I'll price those remaining parts.

That's one of the worst buys I've ever seen in my life. The 8400GS would easily eat that for lunch. SLI of two older generation cards has proven time and time again to not be as fast as one newer card, one performance range up. And for $190, you almost have an entirely new computer, as I've shown above.

I can't stress enough how horrendous a buy that is.

Trueblue, yes it can take a 775 P4 (with a FSB of , if you happen to have an extra one.

HI, everyone. How's life? Did you all have a good Valentine's?
Please tell me you all aren't still berating Tha General because of preference of PCI cards over PCI Express.
Anyway let's get down to business. I have a question. Today i was telling a friend about my dilemna, which is that i need a new graphics card cuz the old one is out of date. She responded that it can't be out of date, that's probably damaged. Here's my question: if the computer has not been moved and it hasn't suffered any physical damage, can anything within the cpu be damaged? And if so, how?
*Of course i'll probably get a new one anyway but it's always good to know this information.*

Update

I am giving up on PCI cards. I am not going to go into details(unless you want to know why) But as of right now, i am going to buy my last pci card early march for my Intel Pentium III, the BFG 8400GS
http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr84512gsp.aspx

And i am also buying my secondary computer next month also
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=9191545

Note: I am only spending 270 on that rig, at another store

I am not using Vista, i have a XP pro disc. I am not into vista right now, or win7.

I don't buy video cards online, infact i am not buying anything online ever again. I have my reasons, but i like buying in the store, off line, drive there, buy whatever you like and get done.

Now that i am moving on to PCIE, I really wanted the Diamond 4670 1GB to be my first PCIE card, but as always they are not sold anywhere offline. So i am kinda puzzle on what i want to buy now. I don't have a budget, but i do have limits. So my limit for a new PCIe card is set at 100. So i will look around in stores the same day i buy my new rig and see what i can buy with it.

Note: I am sticking to the trend tho, i am never buying any card that needs a connector.

I must say, i am real excited. :)
peace, and i will let everyone know when i get it :)

Wow.... And here i was all excited cuz i thought "hey, there's somebody here, who's going against the norm and sticking it out!" and then i read that.... Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. I don't want to know why you decided to change your mind, it's none of my concern. So i'll just say good luck and have fun in all your future gaming experiences.

Ok it said dual core just makeing sure....lol
That other computer is a dell dimension 8200....w/o a hard drive 1gb od rdram...

I do have a friend that has a gefore 7800 that i could have...

KarmasAlexis I really don't post in this thread anymore, because i have move on to pcie. However, unfortunately at the moment i am not interested in buying my secondary computer yet. Not going into any details, but at the moment i am only interested in buying my last pci card, which is this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8990666&type=product&id=1218007087696
This will be my last PCI card, i buy for my pentium III. Just waiting for the price to drop a bit, you know a sale, then i will grab it.

Nevertheless, i have move on to pcie when i get my secondary computer. So i will not posting too much in this thread anymore.

peace

You lost me here on this post. Im confused. No relevance

LOL, i don't know. Anyways, i am going to go ahead and buy the bfg 8400gs as for my last pci card. I will post a gpu-z shot once i get it.

As for my secondary computer, which was price cheaper at a pawn shop in my area, they jack up the price, so i am kinda out of luck right now with what to buy. I was going to buy that dual core last night, but the price went up.

Soooooo i am still looking for a new rig to buy, plan to go back out tomorrow and look around so more. So i guess i will have my new secondary computer soon. I can't wait to get that bfg 8400gs for my p3 tho. Should be a nice performance boost compared to my 2400hd.

peace

VNf4ultra should update the first page of this thread with the lastest pci cards, and the last 15-20 pages should be deleted. The thread is getting confusing.

Ok, I updated some links on the first post. I had tried to modify the first post before, but it would no longer allow me to edit. I assumed it was due to thread age or something, but it works now.

Good post and update. Now lets try to not "blog" in this thread as though we want people to know our daily computer plans and upgrades.

The Dimension 8200 is worse than your current computer other than that it has an AGP slot.

A Geforce 7800 would run COD4 fairly well. Can you get it free or otherwise how much? If you get it free and are still willing to pay $300, I can spec out a better overall computer minus the video card that will give you a much better overall computing experience. What size hard drive do you want?

I can get the card for free but would like to stay around a $200 mark... was thinking i could get a dule core cpu now though,,,,LOL

It's really funny this thread we PCI /maybe PCI Express x1 graphic cards users only have that, gaming on PCI is known by you PCI Express x16 users is bad. Have any of you compared PCI to PCI Express x16, Yes or No.

Which is real strange is the cards going on sale there all are very difficult to find unless you buy online at certain places, in parts of the world you have trouble finding them, it's good vnf4ultra that you updated the first post to advise which cards to buy. What should this thread be about how games are on PCI cards or upgrading to play basic games only on a computer with Integrated graphics mobo without PCI Express x16 or AGP. What about people with PCI Express x1 slot like me is that the same.
