So you only have PCI slots and want to game?

someone snuck in here and commited facts.......

Yukikaze,
well there you go again letting the facts get in the way! :haha: nice job!

How do you know the results you don't have any PCI cards. Another thing to consider is PCI Express x1.

So get the 8400GS or 9500GT PCI.

Well that's good news.:suspiciou

I do have a PCI card (8500GT), as well as a PCI-E x1 card (Which I modded by sawing the other lanes off a PCI-E x16 HD4350). In addition, I've collected plenty of information from other sources, since I often deal with small-scale systems on the mITX factor, PCI cards are an interest of mine.

These cards are great to convert older PCs into HTPCs, or to run older games (Up until the year 2005 or so), but they will not run any of the following with any degree of playability (Over 24FPS on average, on lowest settings, at 1280x1024 or 1440x900 resolutions):
Crysis
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Fallout 3

I don't know that they will even run those games that fast, especially on a P4 or less. Nice post and refreshingly informative. (as opposed to mind-numbingly inane)

They won't, that's precisely why I said: "but they will not run any of the following with any degree of playability".

As for the post, thanks. I tried to make it in contrast to the last few pages of the thread....

It's running with a 250 power supply and with a cooler, named: Antec Cyclone Blower

EDIT: Antec Cyclone Blower

Is the 8600GT the best if it's not made by Albatron, i.e. Asus or XFX? I really want the best video card on the market for PCI, I am trying to run Flight Simulator X more than half decent than what I have now. Also for 8400Gs, there are so many, PNY, BFG, eVGA, et al. Which is the best for both the 8600GT and 8400GS - does it matter? Thanks.

It is pointless to run FSX on a PCI card IMO. FSX requires a powerful GPU and CPU (unlike the majority of games that are heavily GPU-dependent) to run smoothly.

http://www.microsoft.com/games/pc/flightsimulatorx.aspx

System requirements for FSX.

* Microsoft® Windows® XP SP2 / Vista
* PC with 1 GHz equivalent or higher processor
* 256 MB of system RAM for Windows XP SP2 / 512 MB Vista
* 14 GB available hard disk space
* DVD-ROM drive
* 32 MB DirectX 9 compatible video card required
* Sound card, speakers or headphones required for audio
* Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
* 56.6 Kbps or better modem for online play

I will try the demo.

Try it out and see for yourself. It's a pretty heavy game that required a couple of updates to work decently even on high-end PCs.

I run FS2004 on my PC now, and I have no clue what video card I have, so I think it will be a big upgrade for me lol....the demo runs OK, not perfect but I'm not dishing out for a computer upgrade this year, so I really want the best video card that I can get for this machine....so are there any differences in who makes the card??

Lets see...I have the lastest Flight Sim and with graphics set to low(not the lowestest it can be) on my 22" samsung I'm getting 30fps, peaking at 35fps while on the ground. Cpu jumping up to 70% at times. That should say a lot about flight Sim. After seeing what crysis did to my 30" monitor there's no way I'll put myself through a flight sim run with it.

:grinthumb thanks for sharing, hope you enjoy your card. Seems pretty decent!

The Albatron is hard to find and only sold in certain states, so you can forget about buying a 8600gt. Your best best is to buy a 9500gt or a 9400gt. The best 8400GS is the EVGA BTW.

peace

supersmashbrada has an i7 920 + GTX 295 build, so that should tell you that you will most assuredly have a hard time running FSX, if at all. Benchmarks I read say it is like GTA IV trying to get to run smoothly.

As for the Albatron 8600GT PCI, you sure that is sold in America General? I can't find it online with Google Shopping.

Hey guys, after more tests. I have tested all 4 OS's from w2k, xp, win7 and vista on this rig with both my 8400gs and 2400hd from catalyst 8.1 to 9.7 and from whatever driver that is supported with my version of the 8400gs, 174.28 to 190.56.

Both cards are a tie, but the 2400HD plays Video playback about 2x more faster and smoother over the 8400gs. I also notice that Crysis runs way better with the hd2400 over the 8400gs, whereas the 8400gs can run other games better like COD4, but the 2400hd can run l4d better and outrun better, but the 8400gs can play older games faster in some way, but also the 2400hd can play timeshift better, or the 8400gs can play alpha prime about 5x faster over the 2400hd. And so on and so. So the bottom line, both cards are good, some games work better with one card and the other one works better with other games, thus they are both a tie in performance. But if you want faster browsing around on the net or just your desktop and want to watch video in HD in fullscreen or just better video playback overall, the 2400 is the way to go.

Which card would i buy if i had a choice to buy a 8400gs or the 2400. I would pick the evga 8400gs. Only because that version has the best specs combine between any 2400 and the 8400gs card.

peace

Run pcmark06 with both cards, and post back with screenshots.

I already ran tests using pc mark 2006 and it was horrible.
http://www.overclock.net/benchmarking-software-discussion/510076-my-3dmark06-score.html

That is with the 8400gs, i only scored slightly higher using the 2400hd. Both were bad overall tho.

3dmark is crap tho, none of those benchmarking programs shows how powerful your gpu or cpu can be. So i don't bother with benchmarking unless its with ATI tray tools when i am using a ati card.

Wait, whats your full specs and OS?
Just curious.
