The RTX 5090 Is No Longer Fast Enough

IMHO no one needs 4k let alone 6 or 8K. Sure they make for some great looking screenshots. But when the graphics are in motion I've found I'm fine with a 27" OLED 1440p. Hell I have a Nvidia surround with 3 24" 1080p and it's fine. A lot comes down to screen size and viewing distance, you simply have to find the sweet spot is all.
I feel we are focusing on the slip up made by Nvidias marketing efforts in claiming the 8K (a few years ago now). The people who made that claim and pushed it in the marketing are not the people who actually made the card. On top of this, I dont know anyone who took it seriously, we all knew it was marketing guff and that makes these articles feel like they are just taking an opportunity to take a cheap shot at this company for attention and clicks rather than anything that might be useful or interesting to consumers.
Id rather just see a product judged based on what it is in an engineering perspective and what people actually use it for rather than aggressively criticizing the manufacturers clearly lacklustre marketing efforts. Besides, I want my manufacturer to put more of my dollars into the hardware and engineering than the marketing.
Things have hugely changed. Gaming accounts for less than 5% of Nvidias "revenue" these days. They could cancel gaming GPUs and only make hardware for AI, it would probably even make them more money. And if Nvidia abandoned the GPU market we would all definitely miss them.

The real takeaway buried in there: a 4K 240Hz OLED will look and perform better than this whole setup for a third of the price, which is the sentence that should end the 6K conversation before it starts.

Oh, I don't think most everyday gamers are casually reaching into the sofa cushions and finding $4,700.
That is not how America works, my good man.
America works by taking a completely unreasonable purchase, dividing it into twelve or twenty four smaller numbers, and suddenly discovering that fiscal responsibility has been restored.
"$4,700 for a graphics card? Absolutely insane."
"$196 a month? Well... I do use the computer every day."
And just like that, the RTX 5090 has transformed from an obscenely expensive GPU into what accountants apparently call "basically Netflix."
The purchase is then further justified by selling the old card for $600, applying $200 worth of credit card rewards, skipping lunch twice, and explaining to the wife that the new GPU is actually an investment because electricity would have been consumed anyway.
This is also why sticker price alone doesn't tell you who is buying these things.
A surprising amount of expensive consumer hardware is purchased not by people with $4,700 burning a hole in their checking account, but by people who have mastered the ancient American financial technique of asking..."Okay, but what is the monthly payment?"
The bank already owns the truck, the phone company owns the iPhone, Klarna owns the television, and now Visa owns 24GB of GDDR7.

I have been playing at 4k on a 48 inch oled for 6 years now. Along the 6 years playing at that resolution I would say more than half the games I played were maxed out and were capable of getting 4k 120hz smooth fps with minimal pasing variance. The rest were obviously using upscaling to 4k. Even with today's $699 9070xt 4k is achievable and playable with minimal image quality loss by adjusting some settings.

Years ago, I had a Titan card and there were plenty of people to tell me I was wasting money.
I don't consider buying the best available product at the time to be wasting money - I consider it to be future proofing.
Around the release of the 2080Ti, when we started getting paper launches, low inventory and scalpers, virtually everyone started aiming to the highest gaming card being introduced.
During the 3090 release, I remember people who sold their 2000 series cards, got on line for a 3000, and then realized 3000 card inventory was too low - leaving them no path of retreat.
Obviously this got worse during the 4000 release and finally we have the 5000 release which is the worst on record.
These CHILDREN are literally camping out with credit cards in their pockets willing to pay any price, or sitting at home behind a PC or a bot ready to hit the sell button.
Since Nvidia, Best Buy and Microcenter REFUSE to do what Apple did and demand pre-orders in exchange for pickups on release day, they continue to get away with this.
I've been lucky: I always get my product on launch day at either MSRP or below it. In this cae, I had my entire computer built around the 5090 and 285k and got it on Black Friday sale for a smooth $4999 plus NYS tax.
I consider this desktop future proofed till 2036 when I'll consider upgrading.

A 5090 isn't something that people can just buy, there is this thing called a budget. People don't need a bently to get to work everyday. if you have the money to waste then by all means, waste it. The fact of the matter is 90% of the population in the US and 99% of the population in the world DO NOT have money to waste.
I don't tell many people this story, but me and my now wife lived out of a station wagon for 2 years to save for the down payment on our house and it took well over a decade for our careers to take off. People don't just make more money, sometimes switching jobs can leave you broke. While we do well for ourselves now, if I were to switch jobs right now it could cost my family in excess of $200,000 if you consider lose wages and I consider myself lucky that we are in a position to take that hit. Most people in the US will be homeless in a month if they lost their job tomorrow.
Sometimes it can take people several months to find and extra $300 just for a low end graphics card. There are those that think if people are that desperate they can't have any luxuries, but at that people they are essentially slaves or endentured servants to the company they work for.

I am a New Yorker and I own 3 properties.
I've NEVER been homeless nor lived out of a car - nor have I rented.
I lived with parents till I bought my first house (30 years old). Till then I just helped pay bills while saving money.
I have never lived on a budget.
If I need more money, I just find a way to make more money, but I'm comfortable where I'm at now.
At this point: the housing market is locked up and I have nothing else to buy - beyond leasing cars when I feel like it. I allocate to the stock market what I want, save what I want and spend when I feel I must.
I didn't buy the 5090 when it was released at $1999. My cousin did - and he wasted $1000 buying from a scalper. $3000.
Had he listened to me and just waited, he could've gotten his 5090 with me and my other cousin's AAT2250 builds and gotten his under MSRP. The 5090 prices cooled off last summer before skyrocketing lasst fall.
I believe in future proofing. I don't need to upgrade till 2036.
My last machine still has a 3090 in I t that I got on release.

Today's high end handhelds are shipping with 1200p resolution at 35 watt tdp, High end laptops with 1800p, and 4k resolution is bumping up to 360hz in the desktop space lol. The market doesn't agree. Seems like the 4k 240 hz oleds was a success hit amongst gamers in the past 2 years. I guess they are testing the water at 6k and 5k ultrawides.4K is a farce. 6K is an outrage.

So like I thought, you were basically handed a winning hand and have zero context for what the world is actually like. You don't just "make more money" in a normal persons world. When saving for our house we both had 2 jobs and there are only so many hours in a week. In the real world there are only so many opportunities. We did the math and we were already maximizing our income potential and the only alternative was to save more. In today's economy, making more and saving more are both our of reach. There are people who can only afford 5050s and they will have them for as long as you have your 5090

I wish you were right but I can tell from people's posts whether or not they have had to navigate the "real economy" not. I could afford many 5090s but I treat every one of my successful dollars the same way I treated my struggle dollars when I had to fight tooth and nail to keep them.

If by "handed a winning hand", you discount that I've worked since the day I was old enough to have working papers - accross the street from my High School in a Mobil mart at 7.25 an hour and then workd security in a pharmacy while in undergrad - and then worked full time while getting my first Master's on scholarship ...paying out of pocket for MS #2...then OK???
My parents never bought me a car.
I bought my own with a 530 FICO score at terrible interest - and slowly built my FICO to 850 over the next several years.
I am part of that K-shaped economy you hear about.
People who had their real estate and stock market assets dialed in prior to 2020 are more than likely doing fine right now. It's those who didn't who are hurting the most.

I think those tests are done wrong. Your base line must be raw 5090/5070ti performance. No DLSS or any other trick, since DLSS probably render in lower resolution.
On top of that, you could add the DLSS results.
If you could update the results using "raw" performance, that would reflect the real capabilities of those cards.
Oh, and I think the team red card deserve to be in this interesting tests too.

The pixel dimensions of 4K, are exactly double those of "1K" or 1080 x 1920. "2K" is closest to the square root of 2 in terms of pixel dimensions, 1440 x 2560.
My point being, why screw around with piddling intermediate increases of resolution, such as "5K" or "6K? The fact is, you can only double the available pixels on a linear basis by going directly to "16K". Ostensibly, if you maintained the size of said 16K monitor. to 32" or less, it might objectively reduce the complaints of some of our more hawk eyed members, regarding "pixelation".
Let's take a moment to compare the visual acuity of an eagle to a human's, for well, ha, ha-s.

Captain, I was with you right up until the RTX 10090 required automotive jumper cables.
Then I realized you may actually be writing Nvidia’s 2034 product roadmap.
And forget the damn xxx90 anyway...I want to be a hawk. 20/5 vision, dual focus eyeballs, UV tracking... apparently I've been wasting money on GPUs when I should've been upgrading the operator.
Somewhere in that future thread a man with a 16K monitor will still insist that 64GB of VRAM is "unacceptable in this price class."

So why do you think the 5090 machine will last you eleven yrs, while you only used the 3090 for five?
