Windows XP

My computer stayed on with screen down. When switching on the screen after a day or two, the following message appeared -

"Windows can not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-Rom
Select "r" at the first screen to start repair."

My action - put in the CD to boot from CD
Blue screen appears after a while - at the top "Windows Setup" and towards the middle the following message -

"File \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.
The error code is 4
Setup can not continue. Press any key to exit"

I have followed this procedure over and over and does not make any progress.
I also tried to go back to the last working configuration.
I also tried to start up in "safe mode"
No success!

Any help would be appreciated.
