What we know so far: Despite AMD's recent declaration that it is prepared to supply Microsoft with its next-generation Xbox chip in 2027, Microsoft has yet to internally establish a release window or pricing strategy. While memory shortages and other supply-chain constraints will complicate any roadmap, the Windows development side appears to be the primary factor dictating launch timing.

Sources recently told Windows Central that Microsoft remains uncertain about whether it can release a new Xbox console next year. Valve recently was forced to delay its upcoming PC-console hybrid due to RAM shortages, but for Microsoft, the readiness of Windows 11 may prove to be the bigger stumbling block for its next-generation hardware.

Prior reports have strongly suggested the next Xbox would effectively be a PC – one capable of running both Windows applications and Xbox console software. Epic Games recently confirmed that its PC storefront will support the device at launch.

The latest information indicates that Microsoft's Windows and Xbox teams are now working more closely than ever, aiming to deliver a streamlined, console-style interface for Windows 11 that builds on the Xbox Full Screen Experience currently found on the Asus ROG Xbox Ally.

That work comes at a tense moment for Windows 11. The operating system has faced mounting criticism after recent updates introduced serious bugs and noticeable performance regressions. According to reports, Windows engineers are now pulling back from new feature development and refocusing efforts on stability and performance.

Inside Microsoft, developers were reportedly caught off guard by AMD CEO Lisa Su's confirmation that the semi-custom SoC for the next Xbox – codenamed Magnus – will be ready in time for a 2027 launch. While a release next year has not been formally ruled out, Microsoft is said to be under no internal pressure to hit a fixed deadline.

Tariffs, RAM shortages, and ongoing supply-chain volatility could further complicate the picture. Microsoft has previously described its next console as a "premium" experience, hinting at a higher price than past generations. At the same time, Asus and other OEM partners are expected to produce alternative versions of the hardware, spanning price points both above and below Microsoft's own flagship model.

The strategy might resemble Microsoft's rollout of Qualcomm-powered Arm laptops in 2024. New Surface devices led the charge, followed by a wave of systems from Dell, Samsung, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer.

While Microsoft's gaming division's immediate focus may be bringing its PC-console hybrid to market, the company is still rumored to be working on an official Xbox handheld. Asus largely dictated the design and pricing of the ROG Xbox Ally, which launched last year under the Xbox brand. Even so, Microsoft's broader corporate priorities lie elsewhere, with cloud services, AI, and business software subscriptions driving the majority of the company's growth and revenue.
