FIC AT009 Radeon 9000 Pro review

--

Gaming Performance - Benchmarks

System Specifications

  • Intel Pentium 4 1.6GHz @ 2.3GHz

  • Epox 4BDA2+ Motherboard

  • OCZ PC3000 DDR Ram 256MB

  • Maxtor 20GB UDMA Hard Drive

  • Windows XP

For comparison sake, I also benchmarked similar cards using the exact test setup, namely a Geforce4 Ti4200 and a Geforce 3 Ti200. All cards were set with vsync off, and driver settings were set to high performance. For Open GL I used Jedi Knight 2 and Vulpine GL. Direct 3D comparisons were compiled using 3DMark 2001SE and the Comanche 4 Demo. I chose to run the cards at resolutions beginning with 1024x768 due to the fact that with today’s systems, anything less is not really feasible anymore, especially with the average size of today’s monitors.

Jedi Knight 2

1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
FIC Radeon 9000 Pro 90.3 82.5 62.3
GeForce3 Ti200 114.2 97.3 71.8
GeForce4 Ti4200 116.8 111.4 88.2

To run the demo you need to start the game up in multiplayer and bring the console down (~). First type devmap ffa_bespin. Next, type timedemo 1 then disconnect. Last not least, type in demo jk2ffa. You will need to bring down the console a few times during the process. After it’s complete, bring the console back down and us the PageUp key to access your results. As you can see, the Radeon card could not hold any ground to the Geforce 4 card. Even the older Geforce 3 performed much better than the Radeon.

Vulpine GL

1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
FIC Radeon 9000 Pro 68.9 55.9 42.9
GeForce3 Ti200 66.4 54.8 41.2
GeForce4 Ti4200 89.9 73.7 54.3

The results here were a bit different. This time, the Radeon card stayed close to the Geforce 3, beating it by a slight margin. The Geforce 4 was untouchable.

3D Mark 2001 SE

1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
FIC Radeon 9000 Pro 8226 6200 4749
GeForce3 Ti200 8098 6361 5549
GeForce4 Ti4200 10142 7828 5952

The Radeon card was substantially slower than the Geforce 4, but faster than the Geforce 3 at the lower resolution.

Comanche 4 Demo

1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
FIC Radeon 9000 Pro 37.35 33.38 26.27
GeForce3 Ti200 36.19 35.76 31.01
GeForce4 Ti4200 71.8 44.45 42.82

The Comanche 4 benchmark is extremely taxing on any card, as shown with the benchmarks. The Radeon did however beat out the aging Geforce 3, but the more expensive Geforce 4 card once again was in a league of its own.
