AMD is not finished with Zen 4 just yet. The Ryzen 7 7700X3D is the company's latest 3D V-Cache-enabled processor, arriving four years after the first Zen 4 desktop CPUs and three years after the launch of the now-legendary 7800X3D.

The 7700X3D is essentially a slightly downclocked version of that processor. It launched at $329, representing a healthy 27% discount compared with the 7800X3D's original MSRP. However, with the 7800X3D commonly available for less than $400, the value proposition was not immediately clear. Then, just days after release, Newegg discounted the 7700X3D to $279, making this new model considerably more interesting.

You might think it is odd that AMD is releasing a "new" Zen 4-based processor in 2026, but by now, you should be used to this. We fully expect the company will still be releasing "new" binned variants in 2030, and we are not convinced we won't see another new AM4 processor later this year.

As for the specifications, the base clock has dropped from 4.2 GHz on the 7800X3D to 4.0 GHz, a 5% reduction, while the boost clock has fallen from 5.0 GHz to 4.5 GHz, a larger 10% reduction. Everything else remains the same: 96 MB of L3 cache, a 120W TDP rating, eight cores, and 16 threads.

The key question, then, is how much performance has been sacrificed and whether the 7700X3D makes sense at its $329 MSRP or its discounted $279 price. Let's get into the benchmark data.

Operating Behavior

Before we get into the blue bar graphs, here is a quick side-by-side comparison with the 7800X3D while running an all-core workload in Cinebench 2026. Under full load, the 7800X3D clocked at 4.85 GHz, while the 7700X3D reached 4.55 GHz, making the 7800X3D 7% faster in this test.

Looking at the maximum recorded frequency during the single-core test, the 7800X3D clocked at 5.05 GHz, whereas the 7700X3D reached 4.55 GHz, making the original model 11% faster.

The 7% increase in clock speed during the all-core workload raised power consumption by 7%, from 85W to 91W. This also increased the peak core operating temperature from 75°C to 80°C. Everything is therefore behaving as advertised: the 7700X3D is simply a downclocked 7800X3D.

Gaming Benchmarks

Rainbow Six Siege X

Starting with Rainbow Six Siege X using the Medium quality settings, we see that the 7700X3D is 8% slower than the 7800X3D. This also made it slower than the 7600X3D, delivering performance comparable to the 7500X3D. Compared with the 270K Plus, it was 6% faster, while it outperformed the 250K Plus by 21%.

Using the Ultra+ preset increased the GPU bottleneck, allowing the 7700X3D to roughly match the 7600X3D. It was just 3% slower than the 7800X3D, though it trailed the 9800X3D by 10% for those wondering. At these higher visual settings, it remained 6% faster than the 270K Plus and 24% faster than the 250K Plus, while also delivering a 27% improvement over the older 5800X3D.

Marvel Rivals

Next, we have Marvel Rivals, tested using the built-in benchmark. At 1080p with the Medium preset, the 7700X3D averaged 216 fps, with 1% lows of 165 fps. This placed it among Intel's latest processors, sitting just ahead of the Core Ultra 5 250K Plus and narrowly behind the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus.

Although it was roughly 10% slower than the 7800X3D on average, it maintained a comfortable lead over the six-core 7600X3D and outperformed the older 5800X3D by more than 20%.

Increasing the visual settings to 1080p Ultra+ narrowed the margins considerably as the GPU took on more of the workload. The 7700X3D averaged 149 fps, with a stable 1% low of 116 fps, making it just 4% slower than the 7800X3D.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Next is Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, again tested using the built-in benchmark. At 1080p Medium, the Ryzen 7 7700X3D delivered a strong result, averaging 232 fps with 1% lows of 150 fps. This placed it comfortably ahead of the six-core 7600X3D and Intel's 270K Plus.

It trailed the 7800X3D by just 4%, while maintaining an impressive 19% lead over the older 5800X3D.

Increasing the visual settings with the Very High preset created a larger GPU bottleneck, narrowing the performance gap. Here, the 7700X3D averaged 198 fps, with a stable 1% low of 121 fps. That placed it within reach of the 7800X3D's 210 fps result while extending its lead over the mid-range alternatives.

Baldur's Gate 3

In the heavily CPU-bound city districts of Baldur's Gate 3, the 7700X3D thrives, much like the other 3D V-Cache-enabled processors. At 1080p Medium, it averaged 197 fps, allowing it to dominate Intel's offerings and beat the 270K Plus by an impressive 35%.

Moving to the Ultra preset, the 7700X3D maintained an exceptionally smooth 163 fps average. This was essentially identical to the 7600X3D, while placing it comfortably ahead of the 5800X3D and once again well ahead of the Arrow Lake processors.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Next is Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, tested in-game rather than with the built-in benchmark. Using the Medium preset, the 7700X3D delivered a very strong result, averaging 203 fps with 1% lows of 148 fps.

This placed it comfortably ahead of the six-core 7600X3D and roughly 7% behind the 7800X3D. It also outperformed the Intel competition, establishing a noticeable lead over both the 270K Plus and 250K Plus while beating the older 5800X3D by 13%.

Switching to the Ray Tracing: Ultra preset dramatically increased the GPU load, compressing the results across the entire field. Under these heavily GPU-limited conditions, the 7700X3D matched the real-world gaming performance of the flagship 9800X3D. Keep in mind that we are using an RTX 5090 at 1080p, so for those chasing maximum visual quality, the CPU becomes considerably less important.

Battlefield 6

Moving on to Battlefield 6, we will again start with the Medium preset data. Here, the 270K Plus put up a strong fight, splitting the difference between the 7800X3D and 7700X3D. The 7700X3D averaged 181 fps, placing it effectively on par with the 7600X3D.

With the Overkill preset enabled, we found similar results, though the slightly more GPU-limited test conditions allowed the 7700X3D to close the gap to the 7800X3D. It averaged 191 fps, making it just 4% slower than the 7800X3D.

Space Marine 2

In Space Marine 2, the demanding swarm simulation tests both core count and cache efficiency. Using the Medium preset, the 7700X3D hit a solid sweet spot, averaging 121 fps with 1% lows of 103 fps. This allowed it to comfortably outperform the 270K Plus while maintaining a steady lead over the six-core 7600X3D. The 7800X3D pulled ahead by around 10%, demonstrating the benefit of its higher clock speeds in CPU-limited scenarios.

Shifting to the Ultra quality preset compressed the results as the GPU became the primary performance-limiting component. Even so, the 7700X3D performed well, averaging 116 fps and reducing its deficit against the 7800X3D to a negligible margin.

The Last of Us Part II

Next, we have The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Using the Medium preset, the 7700X3D delivered a highly playable 180 fps average. Interestingly, Intel's Arrow Lake processors performed particularly well in this title, with the 250K Plus beating most of the X3D lineup. The 7700X3D performed virtually identically to the 7800X3D and 7600X3D, suggesting that cache scaling reaches its limit fairly early here.

Stepping up to the Very High preset reinforced this behavior. The 7700X3D averaged 173 fps, perfectly matching the 7600X3D and trailing the 7800X3D by just a single frame.

Spider-Man 2

Next is Spider-Man 2. Testing with the Medium preset allowed the 7700X3D to stretch its legs, averaging 217 fps. This placed it just behind the 7600X3D and slightly ahead of the 270K Plus.

The Ultimate Ray Tracing data produced an interesting result, with Intel's processors handling the engine's high-overhead settings particularly well. This pushed the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus to the top of the chart with 109 fps. Meanwhile, the 7700X3D averaged 89 fps, placing it roughly in the middle of the X3D lineup.

Mafia: The Old Country

Moving on to Mafia: The Old Country, the 7700X3D averaged 130 fps using the Medium preset. Intel's Arrow Lake architecture held a slight advantage in this title, with the 250K Plus and 270K Plus establishing a minor lead over the 7700X3D. The new Ryzen processor performed almost identically to the 7600X3D, though it still maintained a substantial 20% advantage over the 5800X3D.

Jumping to the Epic preset introduced a significant GPU bottleneck, causing virtually all of the modern processors to deliver similar results. The 7700X3D averaged 101 fps, matching the 270K Plus and finishing just one frame behind the 7800X3D.

Assetto Corsa Competizione

Switching gears to the racing simulator Assetto Corsa Competizione, the large pool of 3D V-Cache once again provided a substantial performance advantage. Using the Medium preset, the 7700X3D averaged 264 fps, outperforming Intel's 270K Plus by an impressive 25% while trailing the 7800X3D by less than 10%.

With the Epic preset enabled, the story remained much the same. The 7700X3D delivered an excellent 216 fps average, keeping it tightly grouped with the other Zen 4 X3D processors while leaving Intel's lineup well behind.

Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4 serves as a textbook example of a heavily GPU-limited game. Even at 1080p using an RTX 5090 and the Medium preset, the chart is remarkably flat. The 7700X3D averaged 158 fps, matching the 7600X3D and finishing just 2 fps behind the 7800X3D.

This behavior became even more pronounced with the Badass preset, producing almost entirely GPU-bound results. The 7700X3D averaged 102 fps, matching the 9800X3D, 7800X3D, and 7600X3D frame for frame.

Arc Raiders

Finally, we have Arc Raiders. Using the Medium preset, the 7700X3D averaged 234 fps, giving it a slight advantage over the 270K Plus, while the 7800X3D maintained a healthy 10% lead.

Increasing the visual settings with the Epic preset naturally tightened the margins, but the 7700X3D remained very strong, averaging 220 fps. This again made it 10% slower than the 7800X3D, though it remained faster than the 270K Plus.

13 Game Average

Across the 13 games tested, the 7700X3D was 7% slower than the 7800X3D on average and 15% slower than the 9800X3D. In turn, it was just 3% faster than the 7600X3D and 6% faster than the 270K Plus.

Those margins narrowed under the more GPU-limited maximum-quality test conditions, where the 7700X3D trailed the 7800X3D by just 4% and outperformed the 270K Plus by a mere 3%.

Cost per Frame

Using the average results from the Medium quality testing, here is a look at cost per frame based solely on the current retail price of each processor.

There are a few interesting takeaways. First, if you could simply buy the CPU and start gaming, the Core Ultra 5 250K Plus would be the best-value option. It costs almost 30% less per frame than the 7700X3D while also offering considerably stronger productivity performance.

Platform Cost: Motherboard and Memory

Now here's how each CPU compares in terms of value when the cost of a full platform upgrade is included. For the AM5 and Arrow Lake processors, we have factored in a $170 X870 or Z890 motherboard and 16GB of DDR5 memory, bringing the combined motherboard and memory cost to $230. The 5800X3D can be paired with a $100 B550 motherboard and 16GB of DDR4 memory for a combined cost of $130.

Adding everything together, the 7700X3D costs 8% more per frame than the 250K Plus while offering similar value to the 7500X3D and 270K Plus. When factoring in the cost of a decent motherboard and 16GB of DDR5 memory, the 7700X3D is a strong-value gaming CPU at $330, though that depends on how cheaply you can find the 7800X3D.

We also see that the 5800X3D makes more sense once the lower cost of an AM4 platform is taken into account. A decent B550 motherboard can still be purchased for $100, while 16GB of DDR4 brings the combined motherboard and memory cost to $130. This takes the total package price to $580, making the 5800X3D an even better value per frame than the 250K Plus.

That said, if we were investing in a platform with no meaningful upgrade path, we would choose the 250K Plus package over the 5800X3D. It not only delivers better gaming performance but also offers considerably stronger productivity performance.

A Good CPU at $329, a Great One at $279

The "new" Ryzen 7 7700X3D is between 4% and 7% slower than the 7800X3D, depending on the game and test conditions. Given that it clocks up to 10% lower in core-heavy workloads, a performance reduction of around 7% in CPU-limited gaming scenarios is a reasonable expectation.

The lower clock speeds also reduced power consumption slightly, and because AMD has used the same thermal interface, we recorded a 5°C reduction in peak operating temperature.

Based on those results, the 7700X3D is worth considering whenever it costs at least 10% less than the 7800X3D. At its $329 MSRP, the value proposition depends heavily on the price of the older model. With the 7800X3D currently selling for around $389, the 7700X3D is about 15% cheaper, which is enough to make it a reasonable alternative, though hardly an exciting one.

However, just a few days after launch, Newegg discounted the 7700X3D to $279 via a promo code. At that price, the verdict changes considerably. It is around 28% cheaper than the 7800X3D while delivering gaming performance that is typically only 4% to 7% lower. That makes the 7700X3D an excellent-value gaming processor and a much easier recommendation.

Of course, it has been less than a week since launch, so we cannot know whether this discount is a sign of things to come or simply a limited-time promotion from a single retailer. AMD has, on occasion, reduced pricing fairly quickly. For example, the Radeon 9070 GRE has already been spotted for $500, a $50 discount just one month after release.

Our CPU cost-per-frame charts were calculated using the $329 MSRP, but at $279, the 7700X3D would perform substantially better in those comparisons.

The broader problem remains DDR5 pricing. With memory costs still painfully high, it is difficult to get excited about building a new platform around a CPU based on a three-year-old product. Still, for anyone already planning an AM5 gaming build, the 7700X3D makes sense at $329 and becomes a standout option at $279.
