CoD4 but no internet

I have a MSI P6N SLI-FI motherboard with onboard ethernet. I'm at college, and my dorm room has an ethenet jack in the wall. I've never had access to internet for my desktop computer (my family has a designated internet computer back home). So, I bought an ethernet cord and plugged my computer up to the wall. I have Windows XP, and it appears to notice that there is a connect, because it says there is a LAN. However, I cannot surf the web with Internet Explorer. I would normally assume it's a motherboard problem, but I am actually able to do some internet related things like playing Call of Duty 4 on multiplayer, download Windows Updates, and log into Steam. A friend said I might have to change some internet options or something, but I can't figure out what to do. Please help! Thank you.

try this
run->cmd /k nslookup www.google.com
If this will not return an IP address, then your DNS setting is wrong.

under Network Connections, right-click Lan Connection->properties
find Internet Protocol (TCP/IP); select and click Properties
make sure ONLY Obtain IP/DNS Automatically are selected
and empty anything that shows up otherwise

I tried and it returned an address. Just to be sure, I looked up the internet options, and the boxes you suggested were already check (and nothing else). Any other ideas? Thanks anyway for your help.
