Dell BIOS Password Removal

Anyone contacted Dellpass on whether his pdf is freely distributed or is it distributed with certain limitations? No royalties involved as on page 3 it said no charge. The old version seems not specifying any limitations on distribution of his work except specifying its copyright of Dellpass!

On eBay, at least 2 people have been make use of his works by selling his pdf, shame!

As the editor of the site in question , i have contacted the writer of the PDF and he has asked me not to distibute it, therefore I am withdrawing the document from the site and a link to his site will replace it, however the other files will remain as well as links and anything else considered to be freely available.

So where is the link to dellpass's website for the pdf? The link provided by Paragon33 will not link to the pdf.

Edit:

The link is slow and is fine now.

Hi Sam,

The link works OK for me, but please note it does not take you to the PDF it takes you to the site where you can BUY the updated version, as soon as I get some money spare I will be investing in it (for my own use not to go on the website.)

Help with C600 Please

Hi Everyone,

I wondered if someone can assist me in any way. I have a Latitude C600.

All the BIOS settings are locked out and I need to enable the CD-ROM drive so I can boot from XP install CD.

I can get in to the BIOS using F2 and on Page 7 of 7, the Admin password says enabled but I can't even try it. The Config password is the one that asks me for one.

Is there a way I can get past this so that I can change BIOS settings?

Is the only method using PaperClip?

If there is a way other than pulling the beast apart I would much prefer this as I seem to mess things up when I try tinkering about like the PaperClip method shows!

Cheers in advance for any advice.

For Dell C600 Admin Password removal

See Ididmyc600's message #570 and download Dell's service manual. If you read the C600 manual and still not confident to do it by paper clip, then donate your Dell C600 to a charity organization!

If you decide to do it by paperclip, there are a lot of people here will gladly help. The 1st step is download Dell's Manual and familiarize yourself with C600 on how to dismantle the laptop and to access that particular chip mentioned by Paragon33.

Hi Joe

As it is just the BIOS that is locked , read the section in the site about building a Hard drive that can be used to reset the service tag , you can use the existing drive as you are planning to reinstall XP,

If you need any further help feel free to use the forum or email me using the link at the site.

Hi Jud,

Am I right to say:

1) Take the HDD out the Dell and put it in to another laptop (any make will do)

2) Format the drive so that it is FAT32 and has DOS Boot files on it (format c: /s)

3) Extract the files from DST.zip on to the drive

4) Replace HDD in to Dell and switch on

Should this work or am I not pointing in the right direction?

I did try another HDD in the Dell but this will not boot, why is that?

Many thanks so far.

Hi JoeKing.

I recently reset the Admin password on my C600 with the great files and help from IdidmyC600 and Paragon33. I didn't need to take my laptop apart at all!

Do you have a floppy drive that you can boot from? If so, make a bootable floppy and copy the files from DST.zip onto it and boot from the floopy. It will clear the EEPROM and the passwords. In my case, I needed to have both a working battery and AC adapter plugged in for it to work. However, it sounds like I was the first one to encounter this as others have done it without a hard drive, battery, etc.

Connect your floppy drive to your laptop and check your boot order in the BIOS to see if the floppy drive is listed. If the hard drive is before the floppy drive in the boot order and since you can't change the boot order because the BIOS is locked, try removing the hard drive so it will go to the floppy drive to boot. If the floppy drive is before the hard drive in the boot order, then you should be fine for booting from the floppy disk.

Hope this helps...
Al

That's the length of it, Paragon does recommend using a desktop PC to format the drive using a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor, but it should work and as as for why another drive wont boot i can;t answer without knowing what happened when you tried to boot.

If you need anymore help please post back

Sounds like a good plan, unfortunately I can't comment as I don't have a Floppy drive for my C600 to test the theory, so if any kind soul has one spare and doesn't mind sending it to me I would be ever grateful ( I know they can be found on ebay but i'm a tight ar*e), and if your feeling really generous I really need a DVD drive ( I know i'm dreaming but I can try).

Hi adinelt,

I can get in to the BIOS but not make any changes what-so-ever!

The only drive that is enabled in the boot order is the Hard disk.

Guess that means there is no way of booting from a floppy then?

Hi Ididmyc600,

Thanks for your post.

The current drive from the Dell is NTFS. If I use FDISK and re-build the drive so that it has a single FAT32 partition, put boot files and DST.zip files on it, should this work when I put the drive back in to the Dell and boot up?

The error that comes up is no primary disk found and therefore can't boot!

Is there likely to be anything on the drive that is hidden and will get removed so I won't be able to use it at all after I re-format it?

Thanks so far chaps.

Hi Joe, no there is nothing on a HD that will be affected by FDISK, just follow the guide on the site and you should be good to go

if your getting Primary disk not found that means the drive is knackered and isn't being detected by the Laptop, you wont be able to use this drive unless you can download the manufacturers diagnostic software (usually a floppy disk that you boot with and have the drive connected , dont worry if the BIOS wont see it as the programs tend to find them if not then it is beyond help) and fix the drive.

I don't know from your post whether you intend to try and use the faulty disk to reset the service tag or if it's just a spare that you have, If you dont have a working disk then you have 2 choices, either buy a new HD from ebay or see if you can get one locally for a good price.

Let me know, I do have a couple of drives that I intend to put on ebay soon but can sell them privately (both are 10 Gig I think)

Hi Ididmyc600,

I've got a very old Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 that has a drive in it that works fine and has Windows 2000 on it. So what I did was reformat the drive and put system files on it so it would boot. I used a Windows 98SE CD to do this. If I now test the new drive in the Tosh, it boots up to a DOS prompt...GREAT!

Now I take the files from the DST.zip and also put these on the hard disk (I do this using the floppy drive in the Tosh). When copy files across I am asked if I want to replace 'Command.com' file and I say 'Yes'

Reboot Tosh and this still works but only says something about not supporting service tags! Anyway, it still boots to DOS and looks good.

Now if I put this drive in to the Dell, this is when it fails to recognised the primary disk!

Do you think if I use the Dell drive, put it in the Tosh and repeat the steps above it will work when placed back in to the Dell?

I really want to be sure before I screw up the Dell drive and am left with nothing!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Well firstly read the forum in full , your question may well be answered in it
.

Then if you don't have an answer, let us know what type of Laptop you have.

Then what it is you need to do.

1 line of question is not going to get you an answer..

Hi, my your hardwork, I dont see any reason why the drive should fail in the dell, unless you have an issue with the ide controller, do you have any HD's that boot in the dell?.

Try what you suggested and let us know, I take it you are putting the drive in the dell with the blade adpator thingy that converts the drive to a dell , (if not it wont see the drive,

The adaptor thingy converts from the pins of the HD to a single line and is black, I keep forgetting to put it on when I change drives

Hey Paragon you reading this thread and do you have any thoughts :haha:

Well first you can try being a but more precise about what happens when you fail in your quest,

Firstly do you get a grey screen with the words..

This computer system (enter tag here ) is protected by a password authentication system, you cannot access the data on this computer with out the correct password

If so and your tag (after the words this computer system) ends in 595B then the software for resetting the password wont work and you will need to use the paper clip method to reset the EEPROM.

If it just the BIOS that is locked (ie you can boot the PC up into Windows) then you can use the DST floppy on the website to build a bootable floppy disk that will reset the service tag this will clear any passwords.

Let us know and try to be precise with your answers

Look here for the files you will need
