HP / Dell / etc. laptop password help thread

Dell D610 locked bios...

I have a Dell D610 which I am attempting to repair for a friend. The bios is locked and I'm attempting to find a way to unlock it. I've seen old posts which provide master passwords. Does anyone offer this service anymore?

The machine is:
Service Tag; 5Q5SGB1
Service Code; 12465757837

Any assistance would be much appreciated. In lieu of a master password is there a way to short the bios to reset it?

Hashcode 00781? Can anyone help with master password

I have a Compaq nx9010 which has a bios password on it. The employee that used to have this laptop no longer works here so I don't know what the password is. I have called HP tech support and since this laptop is about 5 years old its way out of warranty so they are going to charge me $40 to tell me the master password! I saw a thread on here from Feburary where Predator was helping some people with these types of unlocks. If someone could help me out I would really appreciate it!

The hash code I get when I press F12 at the password prompt is:

00781

Sorry I just noticed the sticky at the top of this forum for recovering these passwords and posted there instead. I don't see a place to delete this post or I would delete it.

Thanks,

I still watch this thread from time to time, and notice that Moderators are in fact quite quick at removing Not Required posts like chris_du_burgh, and usually the member themselves from TechSpot (due to posting links to pay for sites)

It is still frustrating anyway, consistantly seeing members post such sites (as quoted there are thousands of them!), and certainly not one in particular that is better than others, although the cheapest reported was at eBay for $10 for about 10 days (probably just to make a name for themselves, before jacking it back up to the $75 norm! or thereabouts)

These posts to external 3rd party "pay for removal" services are not the intention of this thread, and only help my argument of, why post here?

If members (or readers) feel they only have the option to pay others (even though Dell's price is still $39 outside warranty) then just Google these services, and stop wasting time and space for members trying to resolve their issue for free here, in this thread.

Therefore I have asked Moderators to remove chris_du_burgh (and his wasted posts) in this intended free, thread. I also advise others not to follow suit and post this crap, that does not help members when searching for an answer to their issue

No doubt, deaf ears on future members

This post was in response to a member's reply, (Member and previous post) now removed, thanks to Moderators again

Speak English

I think you asked why PMs cannot be done between members without enough posts to their name.

This limitation is to stop new users abusing the system
And PMs are not meant for members to post 3rd party links anyway, the only reason it's indirectly allowed, is because it's not on the public free forum

If you or others, require a higher post count just to PM other members 3rd party links (outside TechSpot) then there is no use being a member here in the first place.

TechSpot is designed to help others with their technology questions openly and freely, not a sales company for private hawkers.

Dell D530 locked out

Anyone be able to solve this, i was asked to have a look at a latitude D530 as it got dropped with the power cable plugged in which caused the socket to break, now fixed i have this problem, i've gone thru post to see if it's fixable, but this seems to be a newish model and security has been put up a notch from the older models. The eprom used is a sst25vf016b, what causes this problem ?.

Thx in advance

you are right, I actually paid $10 and it worked... but, now that I have another friend with the same problem... I asked him/them (from Germany) to pay for another one and now the price is $50us... :blackeye:

Actually I sent them an eBay message, the day after they went up, to ask them to bring it back down. But no reply given then or since then :(
I actually wanted to quote that someone was in fact doing it cheaply (as also reported by another member (here) at the time, maybe you?) I like confirming what members say, during posts.

Anyway the "Fastback68... "paper clip" pdf guide?" and all other info and links are in all these posts (and even the last thread too)
They are the first option of anyone trying to remove their passwords
I've even made lists of computers and eeproms, and even linked pics and lots of other helpful info (alongside many other helpful support members here)

It's best for new members to check all posts here (from number#1) onwards, before creating a new reply.

I had a good read through all of these posts. I appreciate all of the information being shared here, and the time spent by gurus answering the questions and requests - especially kimsland's work.

Though enlightened, this here Inspiron 700m is no better off I'm afraid. Unless I missed something, there's no free solution for this model yet. What makes things worse is I'm from Canada, and for whatever reason, Dell's international ownership transfer form requires the knowledge of the original owner... even though the U.S. form doesn't. My aunt doesn't know for sure what name the original owner registered as... it's a Chinese name, so it might even have been entered in Chinese, in which case I wouldn't even know how to type it.

kimsland, if you have any other info or links about efforts on the 700m, it'd be appreciated. The furthest I got was digging up the datasheet for the KBC used on the 700m. I'm considering trying to reset it using the information in the datasheet, but don't want to toast her notebook unless someone has tried it first :p

Your manual:http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins700m/EN/SM/index.htm
Your chip: 93c46 and PM40fl004T (actually not positive)

I don't really want to get back into this thread anymore though
It keeps frustrating me with what I spoke of earlier
My pursuit of the 595 generator is still going though, I'd even purchase it.
I feel that I will have it inevitably anyway, but today would be nice
Also I really should buy a laptop one day !, but it's a luxury item, that I don't need, sadly. Just want.

hey guys,
does anybody in here already managed to remove the bios password from dell latitude d830. if so, can the person give us more details on how he did it?
i bought a dell latitude d830 2 weeks ago, still can't boot the laptop (frustrating as hell!!). i need to be doing some schoolwork this week but without a laptop i'm screwed big time.
can anybody help me out. i can't buy any key (master password) at the moment 'cause i spent all my money on this laptop.
my st: 50VJ83J-595B
express service code: 10936876735
thanks in advance.

has anybody tried the full version of Fastback68... "paper clip" pdf guide?
is that really good?

I think it´s a good idea

HP Support

If you have a HP and it's out of warrenty, you are not going to get any help from their support. Kimsland, did you ever finish contacting the HP support? The only help anyone will get to solve a bios password is by going through all the post like I did. I read everyone of them and found that there were only 3-4 people that verified they actually solved their problems on this board. I contacted "Champ" who was banned, but if you go back you can find his contact information. It's a crying shame that HP does owners of their laptops such a dis-service.

Yes I did get word back from them
It took a while to try to work out what they could do. It's true at one stage HP were nearly giving away this information online, but not any more!

They want the entire computer sent back (what a waste of money and time)
And therefore to actually see the Physical computer, gets the same cost as any other corporate customer (even if private) at $298 (exactly!!!)

Absolute madness, I told them (and provided all links and direct quotes from Dell) stating Dell didn't need the computer, and it was only $39. I never received another reply from that. So I sent another email and said that if I purchased a new Hp notebook, and then this password issue happened, were you saying that this is my only choice? To pay $298 !!! I then stated that, looking at the amount of users who have HPs with an unknown password set, shows that it may happen one day, and this issue will therefore affect my advertising for users to actually purchase a HP laptop, where I would likely advise against it.

Here was the response:

Dear Kim,

Thank you for writing back to us.

I do understand your concern in this regard.

Kim, I would like to inform you that the BIOS password can be reset by removing and replacing the CMOS battery in some models of the notebooks. In such cases, the users can refer the notebooks Maintenance and Service guides for the steps to remove and replace the CMOS battery on their notebooks. If the users are unable to do so, then they can contact the HP ASPs for service or send the notebook directly to HP for BIOS reset.

However, in some models of the notebooks, the BIOS is placed in a special chip which is integrated on the motherboard. In these cases, the only option is to reflash the BIOS chip.

The cost for the service for BIOS Reset includes setting up the service, notebook pickup and return to the address provided by the user.

Further, your comments have been forwarded to the appropriate people within Hewlett-Packard for their information and action. Should more clarification or information be needed, you may be contacted directly. Your input is important to us and very much appreciated.

I hope the above information is helpful to you and addressed your concern. If you need any further assistance or clarifications, please reply to this E-mail. We would be delighted to assist you.

Sincerely,

Sophia
HP Total Care

Are they saying, just to re-flash the Bios chip. Is that all?
If so, and if you still have CD Boot option, then that's what I'd try, before sending it back (actually forget sending it back, it's just not worth it, for HP
