Skype has a bit of a storied past. As we discussed in May, the voice and video calling platform has faced numerous identity crises over the years, going from a major success story to utter failure, and then back to a success story.

The platform's troubles are due in no small part to the many competing voice and video communications services out there, such as Discord.

However, while Discord primarily appeals to gamers, Skype has finally found its niche in the enterprise market by appealing to businesses. As a result of this new focus, Microsoft will finally be implementing a call recording feature, something many users have wanted for the better part of the last decade.

To be clear, the feature isn't available now. Rather, it will arrive later this summer alongside a host of other business-oriented features, including "Read receipts," encrypted audio and text messaging, and group links.

If those features are a bit too far off for you, Skype has some more immediate news for you to chew on as well: the desktop app has received yet another major redesign today, shifting the software's interface to a more mobile-like look.

Whether you agree with that design direction or not, it's arguably a step in the right direction compared to the app's last visual overhaul.

I've found Skype to be worse than malware. Once you've signed up and installed the program, it damn near takes a hard drive re-write to get it off. You are incessantly dealing with Skype pop-ups and e-mail carpet bombing once you create an account.

I had a good friend who signed up for a monthly revolving payment account with Skype because she was using it to talk to her son who was attending school overseas. Once he was back, she wanted to cancel the monthly billing and close the account. She couldn't figure out how to do it on her own, so I gave her a hand. And it literally took me nearly two hours to close her account and remove all the "Skype-ware" that was on her machine.

Really? I just hit add/remove in Windows 10 and get it off. There are multiple versions of Skype (normal, Windows 10 store version, Skype web, Skype for Business). Of course, Microsoft will prompt you quite often to install it back when you install their other products/services.

Unfortunately for me, we use it at work for out team collaboration. ****ing awful, we should have switched to Slack a while back or alternatively Discord (considering Discord is free, although for gamers but still).

The UI overhaul a few months back was so bad that I'm adamantly sticking to Skype Classic on my computer, despite the daily nagging and emails from Skype trying to get me to upgrade. Hopefully their new UI will be better.
