What RAMpocalypse? Valve's monthly Hardware and Software Survey offers critical insight into the PC configurations of gamers worldwide. Recent surveys have shown AMD gaining ground on Intel in the CPU space, while Nvidia has kept its lead over AMD as the preferred GPU maker. The latest report now reveals that 32GB of system memory has become the most common configuration for gamers, despite the AI-fueled price hike.

According to the Steam Survey for September 2026, 32GB is now the most common system memory configuration for gaming rigs among Steam users. The data shows 32GB systems accounted for 42.22% of all rigs sampled during September, a 4.77-point gain over August, when 16GB was still the most common configuration.

While the trend applies to Windows, Mac, and Linux devices alike, it is most pronounced on Windows PCs. The survey indicates that 32GB systems made up ~43% of all Windows gaming rigs in September, a 4.81-point increase over August.

The second most common configuration was 16GB, which accounted for 37.6% of all Windows systems, down 3.47 points from August.

Across all three platforms, 8GB was the third most common option, at just over 6% of all gaming rigs. Interestingly, around 1% of gamers are still holding on to their old 4GB systems.

At the other end of the spectrum, almost 4% of participating devices were configured with 64GB of RAM, while around 0.5% were apparently fitted with even more.

On the software side, Windows 11 continues to gain market share as the most popular PC gaming platform in the world. The survey suggests that 71% of all participating devices ran Windows 11 in September, a tiny jump over August. For reference, just 23.6% of people are still sticking with Windows 10, despite Microsoft ending support for the OS last year.

Overall, Windows accounted for 95% of all operating platforms among Steam gamers, while Linux ranked second at 3%. Thanks to the fragmentation of the Linux ecosystem, none of the distros came close to double-digit usage.

Meanwhile, despite Apple's recent attempts to make the Mac a viable gaming platform, macOS accounted for only 1.92% of all gaming devices on Steam.

Is this survey user-self declared, or people are just so stupid to buy only because PC parts became luxury items?

Ive using 32GB since before covid. 7-8 yrs now. Before was 16GB for about a decade.
I had no issues either way with memory. I had one module ever fail and my son had one fail, all this over like 20 yrs.
I suspect one day 64GB will be mainstream but that could still be a decade away. Granted all this will depend on how the pc is being used. For me, just gaming and browsing, nothing for work.

Steam survey is if you accept/turn it on type of thing. I never did use/turn it on when I used Steam, last time I used Steam was a decade ago. Haven't gone back.
My son uses Steam but I dont think he uses the Steam survey.

Current trend for prebuilts and laptops even at the high end is to put slower kits at 5400 mhz and slower. Seen 4400 mhz make a comeback even with other premium parts.

No mention of its DDR4 or 5. Steam surveys are also wildly inaccurate
There's no mention if their case is black of beige either. How can we take anything away without such crucial information!!!!!

Certain games can already gobble up RAM, coupled with Windows bloat and 32GB is the real minimum for any current build. I remember having to upgrade to 32GB just for No Mans Sky back in 2016.

64 is currently overkill but so was 32 GB just 5 years ago. I dont think it will take a decade, not at the current rate of shoving AI slop everywhere.

Kind of is becaure people adding more RAM to a DDR4 system isn’t the same as buying new DDR5.

The steam survey is also controlled by valve and never really ones up with reality.

Haven't fired up steam in years. Linux at 32GB so I can also run Windows VM on occasion for those programs that still need it. AMD GPU with a spare Intel and older Nvidia GPUs on my other PCs.

Other outlets reporting this noticed the large increase in Simplified Chinese share showing that this large change is due to a larger sample from China than normal.

Gaming cafe's are more popular there, but regardless this isn't a true sift in hardware in the the last month but a shift in who's hardware is being surveyed. Nothing shows that those 32GB systems in China weren't bought prior to prices going bonkers.

It's annoying when the people reporting this show how little they researched their article. I shouldn't know more just because I follow three tech sites instead of one.
