Dell Inspiron 8500 BIOS password unlock
Hi All!
Just to confirm that it's totally possible to reset the BIOS administrator password on the Dell Inspiron 8500 using the aforementioned paperclip trick.
If you are looking for the security chip on the 8500 it's located on the top of the motherboard about 5cm in from the headphone socket on the right of the laptop directly under the hard-drive caddy cage (you won't see the chip immediately, it's underneath a plastic insulating sheet).
You are going to need to unscrew the keyboard and remove the upper plastic casing which sourrounds the touchpad etc. Then remove the hard drive caddy (remove one screw and it'll slide out with encouragement). It can be a bit of a fiddly job and you'll probably end up unscrewing things you needn't of, but have patience and make a note of what screw came out of whch hole unless you've done this sort of thing before.
MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU'VE GOT THE RIGHT CHIP - you really won't get a second chance at this if you guess and get it wrong - shorting the wrong chip will result in one totally dead and deep fried mobo.
It took me about 15-20 attempts to short the security chip properly and blank it's contents. Sometimes the board wouldn't boot at all with the paperclip making contact so I had to remove it, waited until the Dell splash screen appeared and then started shorting the connectors. Some people seem to find success in removing the paperclip just before the 'administator password' screen pops up, but I just kept that sucker on there until it gave in and wiped itself.
Just for the record I didn't actually reach any sort of 'manufacturing mode'. I just suddenly got a standard bios type message screen stating that no bootable drives were found (because the HDD was disconnected) and then upon reboot it had cleared the password (which I double checked by entering the BIOS setup).
Fortunately for me the bios password had only been enforced on bootup and they hadn't locked the HDD down too! (which is good - that would of been a waste of 60Gb!!!)
The key is.. don't give up! Persistance is the watch word here. It probably won't work first time but stick at it - this method DOES work providing you do a bit of research and take your time.
I'd just like to thank all the useful contributors to this thread. I read it from start to finish yesterday and it took me about 2 hours last night to unlock the laptop (and thats only because it took me a little time to get the laptop stripped down and locate the security chip).
Thanks guys, hope you all have similar success.
