3D Spotlight : Hardware : ACT Labs Gun System review

ACT Labs Gun System review
Posted by Julio Franco on December 22, 1999
Company: ACT Labs     Product: Gun System

From my past experience with products coming from ACT Labs I had very high expectations for this one, the first serious offer of a Gun System for the PC.

The concept of a Gun System reminds me of all the fun I had playing Duck Hunt in the old Nintendo with the light gun that came bundled with the first shipments of the console, since then, light guns have been in constant evolution with every good console that has arrived to the market.

However we never saw any serious attempt from a company to introduce a Gun System or something similar for the PC, well… one of the biggest reasons was that compatibility was a huge problem with any non-standard hardware peripheral in either DOS or older builds of DirectX and we would have needed an add-on card for using them.

Not to mention that a few years ago PC gaming wasn’t taken all that seriously and if you consider that the ACT Labs Gun System was in development for about a year and a half there is nothing we can complain about.

Here are some specs of the GS:

  • Innovative system includes 2 guns and a handheld controller
  • Convenient holster-style base
  • Contoured rubber gun handle
  • Rubber textured buttons
  • Elastomer soft rubber holster pockets
  • Each gun unit has 2 buttons (one trigger, one side mounted)

  • Upgradeable for future weapons and accessories
  • Uses ACT LABS own patent-pending technology
  • 3D accelerator support (all major chipsets)
  • Compatible with VGA video cards and CRT monitors
  • Compatible with extra large monitors (21" and above)
  • Game port and video computer connection
